If we had a single tank vs. tank with equally trianed crews is there anyone who would pick a T-72 over the M1A2 or even the wheeled light tankette we were discussing?

Well, not the T-72, but I would take the T-80UV everytime over the M1

The Russian tanks were better until the M1 showed up, and then there was a parity between the top models, after the brakeup they basicly didn't do anything.

Hmmm, so some think that in late 80's and early 90's the T-80 was a superior tank vs the M1. I'm sure CDAT will want to weigh in on this. He might even know some of his former adversary's weakness. Enlighten us O' great one! ;)

Just follow the upgrades that book tanks recived. It was a death race, more armour to counter the AT rocket, stronger gun to pentrate the front armour... Every single update of both sides made the other tank superior.

I'd hop in an M60A3 and go against an T-72. Further reach. Once again, to stir the pot, all the T-72,T80,T-90 are all the same tank with more add-ons. I'd still go one-on-one with any of them. If the T-90 is so good, how come they're being exported so soon. You ever see inside of a T-80? Still old @ss tech's compared to ANYthing we have. I have nothing against the Russians but they are a Looooonnnngggggg way from matching us in tank warfare. They lost their edge at the end of WW2.

The T-80 and T-72/90 have nothing, zero in common.
Oh, and good louck with the M60A3, with some luck you might be able to scrath the paint of the frontal arc. On the other hand, the T-80 can kill you with the refleks within 5km.
Speaking of old tech, my calculator has more power then the computer M1A1. ;)

As for the export, Russia war industry has colapsed, and they have repedeatly stated that everything is up to sale.

Will the Russians ever have the "best tank"?

Here is an attempt:
untitled202.JPG

External fuel tanks (extra)? Until they get this dumb@ss notion out of their heads, they'll never match us.

Russian DAT "......Uh, Sir? Why do we put large flammable bombs near our engines that any small arms weapon can detonate?"
Russian Officer ".....Er....Are you questioning our mighty military techies? We will always rule those fat imperialistic American dogs! Because...because I said so thats why! Haven't you read the propaganda that we spew on our own equipment? We are light years ahead of our American counterparts! We perfected the tank with the introduction of the MIGHTHY T-72 and have tweaked it every few years since then! Did you see our superior qualities during Desert Storm?"
Russian DAT "Sir? The Americans only lost 2 M1's in all the direct fire engagements combined against our exported T-72 and all those crews survived!"
Russia Officer " HA!!! You've proven my point, comrade! During the cold war, we were willing to take losses of 10/1 against them! We've narrowed it down to 5/1! If that's not progress, what is?"
Russian DAT ".........?" ;)

Diesel plus self sealing tanks. Good luck with ignition that.
I thought you were teached to not shoot at that. At least other tankers were.

Every year in Germany they have a CAT gunnery event. Anyone can go one-on-one against every other country. The Canadian Army/Armor Trophy. Has Russia ever participated in this event?

Well..the name "T-90" is misleading, it suggest that that tank is newer than T-80, but it's not. While T-90 is indeed an upgrade of T-72 the T-80 series is new design.

Self Sealing? Just like the Self Sealing tires on a BTR-60? The last one of those I "lit up", my APIT (Armor Piercing Incendiary Tracer) .50 went right through the tires and penetrated the hull. Yes, the tires went flat.

Afaik, it is newer, but the designs are parallel to each other. The Sovjets had three big tank factories, and three different models. The T-80 should have combined the best of the T-64 and T-72, but it didn't live up to the expectations, mostly due the turbine, which is aparently a major flaw

Yes, a weak spot no armour behind the tires. A lot of T-55 & M-84 have been destroyed in the balkan wars, but I don't think one was destroyed trough tracer rounds.
Good luck trough if you have to.

The best thing going for the T-80 is it has a low thermal signature. From the front, it is very hard to see. If you look for the exhaust, then you can identify the outline of the tank. That is about the best thing that reactive armor does. Hard to see through thermal sights.

I happen to agree that the exernal tanks are ugly but I doubt that they are any sort of a hazard. Let's forget the argument that if hit by fire it would cause "any" damage to the tank. If they are removable then the extra fuel would help in allowing the tank to travel farther on one fillup. That helps the Russians when they are trying to reach Berlin. :D

t90 Range on full tanks = 403 miles.
M1A2 Range on full tank = 310 miles.

Give me the extra gas dude.

Russia wants to go to Berlin. We can sit there and wait. Don't need no fuel than. I've always agreed that the A2 sucks when it comes to fuel. ;)
