I'd surrender any "who had it the toughest" pissing competition to AT jägers or engineers straight away. No contest.

And you probably shouldn't divulge that sort of information over the net ;)

Your work days remind me of mine before I jacked it all in and moved back into academia.

A Canadian Leopard C2 in Khandahar, Afghanistan...

Quite cool looking, I wish that Denmark would keep some of their Leo 1A5 DK and give them the same kind of armor upgrade, for use in international operations, where the Leo2 is to heavy to be deployed...

Wow, really awesome picture! Why do Canadians have Leopards?
Because it's a good tank? Why wouldn't they have Leopards?

BTW, Mr. Penguin, are you saying that Denmark is cutting it's tanks away?

The US doesn't sell the same Abrams tanks as it uses. That's one reason I know why most countries that don't get money to buy them choose the Leo above the Abrams ;)

I take it that you probably mean Leo 1A5 DK. Let's not confuse people. ;)

Not what I meant. I probably would like to know why they chose Leopards over other tanks such as Abrams, Challenger 2, etc.

Is it cheap to buy? Good quality? Better handling?

The Canadian Leopards are upgraded versions from Leopard 1. So they're technically still of the previous generation than Abrams and Leopard 2. Why they chose Leopard 1 over M60 in the first place I don't know, but I do think that if they were to buy a new tank the US would give them the Abrams they have themselves if the Canadians wanted. What with them being in the NATO and all. Why Canada hasn't updated its tank fleet past upgrades to existing tanks is purely politics. There's no political will there to buy new tanks, and in fact there's been plans to even scrap the existing ones and not replace them at all. The deployment of Leopard to Afghanistan might imply a change in politics at least to the extent of keeping the Leopard C2s - or it might not.

I beleive the Leo2 is the most popular tank for export. Not merely because it is a good tank but Britain/France/USA don't like giving all of their secrets away.

Can you imagine the UK selling a tank full with Chobham2 armour to a potential enemy. The same would probably be true of the Abrams and leclerc tanks. As these three countrys are the only countrys in the world with any power to export conventional force, one would assume that they would remove a lot of the secret tech from their armour.

And no cooperation does not extend throughout NATO. I remember having a wee 4 little electrical devices in one of our labs (captured in Iraq) while an American officer was adament that US forces had destoryed all of them ... Oh really?
