It actually can become quite hot in Sibiria as well. I've just happened to look at a documentary in TV, here's the link (don't worry, lot's of pictures in it, easy to understand)

North of sibiria: Long winters (up to 8 months) and only short summer, temperatures only going up to 10C..
Southern part of sibiria (where, for example, the Sibirian Railroad crosses, plus most of the industry are.. besides that, flown from Europe to China? That's the route you're flying over... does look quite green, even in October

the weather is more like in Norway. Longer winters for sure, but in summer it becomes easy up to 30C, and that for a few months, and you can get a lot of sunshine as well. I'm more placing that tank battle in summer there... I guess I'll have to call Putin, good he's a excellent german speaker
