The USSR, definitely. It's the best nation of choice for a rookie. "Perfect" slider settings, lots of units... try it.
(although I haven't played I'd regret if I was playing a commie nation  ... no offense)

The U.S would probably be far too boring at the start for a new player. I started with the Germany 1939 scenario. You start at war with a much greater airforce then Poland and France allowing you to learn the mechanics of air power, and it's quite easy to overwhelm the French and Polish armies.

I'd suggest Germany in the '36 scenario. A lot of time to find out about the game and experiment with your IC and what to spend it on, lots of Diplomacy and a lot of warfare.

Remember, you will often learn more from failling so if you start losing go with it- it can also yield very fun experiences.

The USA i think is a bit too big for a new player. Soviet Union is better because its more focused to certain fronts however be careful with the Germans.

Good Luck!

I suggest the Italians, free range of motion, a good strong ally, and most importantly you can do whatever the hell you want.

i ahve to admit that my first 2 games i used cheat for ressources so i could focus on game mechanics ( exept trades ).
so if u dont want to cheat for ressource use IC to produces supplies and those supplies u use to get oil, rare and metal. ussr and usa are best trading partner for a while.

My first was Argentina, lol
Honestly from a pretty novice standpoint (I've only played about 10 'full' games) Japan is the best and most interesting one for a new person. Fun sliders, good army and navy, great tech teams, the works.

I think the USSR is a good start option, as you'll find your situation has the following advantages over many other states:

It's a powerhouse in terms of IC and is swimming in resources.

The war will come to you, so you need only experiment with what to build/research and how to prepare for the German onslaught.

You don't have to worry about navy or o/s provinces.

You won't run out of manpower.

UNLESS the Japanese stab you in the back, you only need to worry about the German front (you can fight the Finns in '39 if you want).

I wouldn't recommend Germany to start with, as your choices are more critical in terms of what will happen if you make 'mistakes' early on. Having said that, mistakes are good learning opportunities....

Hehe, all those partisans draining your TC?

YES! And I had to build about 70 garrison and police divisions, I'm beginning to wonder if the 70 or so IC is worth it..

As well as my supply lines being completly stretched to the limits.

But isn't it worth seeing the Japanese flag fly over all of China?
