I may be a little off-topic here.

The average rating for H.o.I. is 74 percent (www.gamerankings.com). It took me a long time to buy HoI because of a bad review of a german Pc magazine.

HoI is a little bit like "Gangs of New York", both will be appreciated once, sorrowly not in the present. How stupid mankind can be, right?

As I said, off topic.

Have you played HOI 1.00 or 1.01? I think 74 percent is rather generous.

Of course, the current version rates about 85 percent in my book.

I played 1.00 or 1.01, can't remember the exact version. Then upgraded directly to 1.05, later 1.05 c, finally 1.06.

I loved it from the beginning, with any upgrade a bit more.

74 percent for the first version is okay. In the German magazine (Pc Game) it was rated somewhere below 70 percent. I couldn't accept that. After all, HoI has always been one of the best strategy games ever. I love strategy games and play them since I was a child. Started with some NATO vs. Warsaw Pact game on the Schneider computer system. Long time passing...

Yes but not everyone understands them - and there is a steep learning curve.

The trick for Paradox will be in marketing - they have to be honest about what to expect when they sell it.
People will rate any game badly that does not deliver on expectation (Half Life 2 is stuffed aye? )
People will accept it for what it is if they have a clear indication of what it is before they part with their cash.
Paradox should put more effort into the in game tutorial - less on the manual (because few people read manuals now - they install and expect to be experts  )

There should also be a link directly to an on line help forum for noobs from within the game.

And this forum should be 'staffed' only by moderators and 'trusted' players to prevent noobs getting spammed on their queries. Quick replies will be critical.
First impressions count - we can help make or break HoI 2 for Paradox in this way.
Once noobs are a bit more comfotable in the forums and realise we are not all wacko warmongers  then they will be comfortable here in the general forums. :D

Then we can make fun of them!

I gotta admit, HoI took me some time to get into it. It's the only Paradox-game I have played so far.

However it's not that complicated, there are far more complex strategy games. Once you understand the primary concepts it's a piece of cake. A piece of an extraordinary delicious cake.

I saw someone buy a copy of HoI today - he also had EU II in his other hand - he juggled them around a bit (Read both boxes carefully) looked around the store for other games (asked me why I was following him and threatened to call police  )

THEN BROUGHT HOI! :D

I was sooo happy! :D another strategy addict!

No doubt he will play it and then show up on these forums... where we will tell him all his ideas are silly
I was wondering what you would get up to in your spare time.

The reason HoI1 recieved such a bad rating was because it was THAT bad!
Seriously, I remeber conquering Europe and Asia as Yugoslavia. There was absolutely no tactics involved.

i remember getting hoi imported to england from america as soon as it came out, i have never been more exited for a computer game in my life (and ive had computers since a zx81 when i was 7!!!) i was dissapointed at 1.00 / 1.01 to be honest, but when bolt and others started modding it was playable to a point but the potential was always there...

I still play this game more than any other today, altough i did stop for a few months.

My point is that as an avid strategy / war gamer i was willing to wait for the game to come good but i think a lot of people are not so keen, hence why a simpler (Sorry, easier to play) game like eu2 (Which is my other favourite) will probably sell more. Problems like the world market are not as glaringly obvious!.

HOI2 could easily do it though, with the experience johan and crew have now.... heh, 30 year old and ill be waiting for this one with all the exitement i had at 10 or 11 waiting for doomdarks revenge :)

IMO, HOI1 will eventually top EU2, which will then be topped by HOI2, which will then be topped by EU3 :)

And as to the above post, Spam! Kill! Kill! Kill!

(I get these on my forums rather often  )
