There was a game once, that might have influenced it a little bit. It was called Hearts of Iron. Really, there are quiet a few features that are reintroduced. Like carriers with real planes on it. Or those thousands of available techs.

Now that I can believe.

I also believe that license production would radically cut the research time for the accuired items. This would better correspond with real life. I do think that most nations building stuff on license did not just build them, they copied and improved the designs to their own needs. Sweden for instance copied and improved aircraft engines built under license in this time frame and it's just realistic to believe that they studied accuired aircrafts and used the knowledge when building their own.

When you build something under licence you gain practical, but you build at the other country's practical thus giving you what you wanted.

Í also like the re-newed HoI1-ish tech system. It could have some more choises (like in HoI1 when you could either use 20mm, 30mm, 50mm or 70mm main gun for a new armour model), but in general i like it.

It is a good thing that practice is now affecting your research, makes it way easier to replace losses and develope a special strategy.

There are some minor things like air units could use some additional techs imo, CAV techs could be included into milita techs, but apart from that it looks nice.

Haven't tried modding, though - and I guess as the OP stated there are quite a lot of problems with adding own stuff - let's hope we will get more options soon. :)
