Based on discoveries on combat mechanics made by @Wethospu in this thread https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/combat-mechanics-explained.1434737/ I've made a very simple program to calculate which regiments might be the best.

Important note: It's situational, buildings and traditions can change this significantly, and I haven't taken counters, cost or terrain into consideration.

Methodology:
Since AI uses mostly big stacks of levies, and in the mid-late game players use mostly pure man at arms I've simulated battles between all regiment types vs 100000 levies and ranked them according to how many stacks were required to win

Values are based on patch 1.5 game files.

You need 1106 regiments of Light Footmen, but only 346 regiments of Cataphracts - so Cataphracts are much better.

I would be very curious to see how it'd shake out if you had 10 full upgraded buildings + 2 duchy buildings. I think it'd show the absurdly overpowered nature of MAA regiments!

Most of the cultural forces shuffle around combat stats and terrain bonuses of the base units. So it's not surprising that in the most basic scenario, the most basic units excel. Only the unique units that trade for higher attack and defense are going to do well in this setup.

Keep in mind this excludes buildings, terrain, counters, pursuit/screen and upkeep. So yes Armored Horseman are great at start, but there are not that many buildings which give bonuses to them compared to other regiments.

... and heavy cavalry only have 50 units per stack, so +1 damage only gives them 50 more damage per stack, vs 100 more for a regular sized MAA.

I haven't run the numbers, but I'm pretty sure heavy cavs aren't all that good.

... and heavy cavalry only have 50 units per stack, so +1 damage only gives them 50 more damage per stack, vs 100 more for a regular sized MAA.

I haven't run the numbers, but I'm pretty sure heavy cavs aren't all that good.
On the other hand percentage bonuses from duchy buildings gives them a lot, so it's hard to say. For me biggest problem with heavy cavalry is that buildings which buff them require very bad terrain.

Keep in mind this excludes buildings, terrain, counters, pursuit/screen and upkeep. So yes Armored Horseman are great at start, but there are not that many buildings which give bonuses to them compared to other regiments.
Unless, of course, you build your domain in the ultimate terrains for training the mightiest cavalry: desert mountains and dense jungles.

The best regiment is siege /thread.

But in any case anything with <100 units per regiment is always going to scale much worse than 100 unit regiment units. A maxed out large demesne Light Infantry will beat maxed out Cataphracts and annihilate maxed out elephants. The only thing that scales better than 100 unit MAA is Knights, who technically scale at O(N^2) while MAA scale at O(N). I say technically because I'm pretty sure you'd need a lot more than reasonable normal demesne size to get knights to actually beat MAA.

I wouldn't be so sure, from my calculations base cataphracts are 3x better than base light footmen, so just to match base units you would need to increase your stats three times assuming they increase linearly, and then cataphracts also get some bonus

Technically, MAA increase O(N^2) since you are increasing both attack and defense and the final quality is attack * defense. And Knights increase with O(N^4) because you increase attack, defense, and quantity (which itself multiplies both attack and defense). But we tend to work backwards from number of troops needed, so when people say "x is 3x as good as y" we interpret that to mean "1x can beat 3y". But when doing math to figure out how stats effect the combat value of units with different quantities you can't factor the number of troops out like that.

Also, in the case of cataphracts there are stats that can increase by 3x. Cataphract base defense is 35 while its not unusual to get over +100 flat bonus to defense from a maxed demesne. At the same time a light infantry can get a 10x increase to both attack and defense, and its bringing 2x as many troops to begin with.

It gives the same percentage as the other MAAs, so once a 100 stack size is stronger than a 50 stack size, making them both 10% stronger doesn't change anything.

Not strictly 100% true. Heavy Cavalry gets +30%/+30% while other unit types get +15%/+45%. The former is very slightly more powerful.

You're right. I just checked Light Cav and saw it got 30/30 too, and just assumed they all did.
