I would add Austria but their status is in jeopardy with the new event and monarch systems. No more inheritances to prop them up.

In 1453, I think that the Military Top3 is (in disorder) France, Castilla/Spain (if they colonize with success the new world) and Ottoman Empire.

I wonder if this new prestige system is specificaly designed to help Austria in it's 'marriage expansions'.

Not England. Probably one of the most centralised states but the military really didn't kick in until Henry VIII/Elizabethan times. Or at least that's what I remember.

Ottomans will almost certainly be THE major power in Europe and the middle-east at around game start.

With the new event system, China could easily be a monster. But in Europe, I'd say France, Castile, and the OE.

I may choose to play China first, just to see what sort of nasty surprises PI has in store for them. Somehow I doubt Johan is giving them a free ride.

Most easily expandable in 1453? Probably the Ottomans.

I don't know about Castile though. Since they're not assured that Arogonese land, are they really a power at the start of the game? I suppose Denmark would be a pretty strong realm if they start out at the head of the Kalmar Union(with Personal Union over Denmark, Norway, and Sweden?)

The ottomans, and then France (which shouldn't be totally unified yet)

But after them Moscow and Poland. Especially if Poland isn't automatically crippled with lots of nasty events.

The Ottoman Empire probably starts with an absurd number of leaders and troops and nearly 100% military tradition in order to kick start them as the massive, conquering power that they were.

France also probably has a great deal of residual military tradition from the Hundred Years War (all but over at this point) and their economy is among the best in Europe.

With no straight jacketed collapse of the Kalmar Union events, I can easily see Denmark becoming a northern superpower.

Poland is large and armed.

Castile could still do well as once colonization in the Atlantic starts (by Portugal, France, Castile, England, w.e.) the power of Aragon will decrease as it lacks an Atlantic coast, thus making Castile more powerful.

France is still severely damaged from the Hundred Years War, but should recover in some time. England is burnt out by the Hundred Years War and War of the Roses. Castile, Portugal, and Aragon will all probably be decent powers in their own right. I can see either Venice or Milan being fairly powerful. Hungary will probably be definitively awesome with no deterministic events. Ottomans should be decent, since they've conquered Constantinople. Poland and Lithuania are likely both powerful nations. Austria or Bohemia would be the best of the German powers. Denmark and Sweden the most powerful in the north. Other than that, the Chinese should be uber.

France and the ottoman empire in 1453, both are united, which is even more important with the dropping of scripted inheritances (may well screw over Castile and Austria) and posses the best militaries and commanders IRL which should give lots of military tradition.

I doubt that Sweden has any power. Spain is very very strong but eventually it ends up a vassal of France. England will always prevail. France starts out struggling but has a bright future. I'd add Netherlands and Austria. Netherlands if you start out with Netherlands in the mid 1600s you have a bright future. I've tried it in EU2 and I rocked. I controlled all of Louisiana, British Canada, a considerable amount of the Carribean, some of South America, a large part Africa, a large part of India, Eastern Spain, Southern France, a bit of western Germany, Belgium, a small piece of Northern France, Florida and a large amount of the thirteen colonies. In addition to that I was filthy rich and loaded with army troops. I was invincible!
Austria is pretty good and has a bright future.

You seem to forget that this game is made in Sweden :D

And if you start as Sweden in the early 17th century in EUII you would also be a real powerhouse
