I like how the Slav languages are like a single one that never got around standardizing.

That's like saying the germanic languages are like a single one that never got around standardizing. They were very similar once, but they grew apart, just like the slavic languages.

Frankly, it seems they to this day are still closer to each other. Say, Lusatian is closer to Ukrainian than Dutch to Swedish, f.ex.

Even if they were do you really think they could come to an agreement? Look at Scandinavia those language are even closer then slavic languages, but do you really think Sweden, Norway and Denmark could agree on a standard?

Two Slavic countries which became empires were called Russian Empire and Bulgarian Empire. In other words, your empire historically called by the name of the ruling nation. Russian Empire actually proclaimed it self as the empire of all Slavs, but never even thought about changing its name.
