QUOTE=Ambassador]If you're playing the AGCEEP, any dutch minor is good, as you can turn into the Netherlands. Especially Brabant with its french/dutch cultures.

The key part for a successful colonization when playing a non-historical colonizer, is to bash Portugal and Spain early and often. Early on, Portugal is weak but has many explorers, so you can attack them every ten years or so, take the capital (and maps) and all colonies/TPs you can. Do the same to Spain starting in 1495-1500 (and take Andalusia when the CoT and shipyards appear). A good move is then to force-vassalize Portugal, and DA them a bit later, to get Tago's CoT and other rich provinces.

So if you are playing normal ( Not AGCEEP) do you still get maps for taking a countrys capital?

In my recent game I did a lot of colonizing with Tuscany :) and later with Byzantine
Where did you colonize with the Eastern Roman Empire? Surely their explorers would sink from attrition before reaching America. Or did you conquer some western Europeans provs first?

Could have made some colonies down East Africa if he captured Sinai...?

Every BYZ game I played I had WAY more pressing concerns than colonization...namely being 2 CRTs worse than the Austrians, Poles, and Turks :^(

Could be military access in Spain or Portugal. Or conquest of North Africa.

The tips I gave about how to handle Portugal and Spain apply for every mods and vanilla. Even in Aberration (just replace "Portugal" by "Eire" and "Spain" by every other). ;)

I traded maps with the Portugese and just sent colonists to California without ever sending a ship there :) Kind of an exploit... They do get conquistadores that l used to explore the West African coast.

BTW as Byz it's nice to ally with Russia since they like you as an orthodox brother. Don't forget to unite the churches in the council of Florence event since you gain the italian state culture. You can later change back for orthodoxy

Well, either you're playing with an old patch in which map-trades give you knowledge of unsettled provinces, or those provinces were previously colonized but natives rose up and burned it down. In the first case, patch the game up immediately. In the second case, I hope you have a nearby army to protect the colony from natives or that you're lucky. ;)

Stay catholic, there're many more rich provinces to conquer that are catholic than orthodox. And you'll have the friendship of more numerous powerful countries than the lone Russia (which isn't already powerful at the time of the union of the churches) and better religion modifiers and the possibility to become Holy Roman Emperor (thus reuniting both Empires). ;)

Plus acording to what I read, you'll loose the fantasy events for renacence of the empire if you go catholic...
BYZ ain't a "mid minor" anyhow, it's a "hellish minor" :D

Rennaissance events only exist for AGCEEP, not for vanilla. ;)
