Best mid-minor for colonisation?

Besides Spain, Portugal, England or France, what countries
are best for being able to explore/colonize that you can start a grand campaign with (not Castille or Aragon)

If you're playing the AGCEEP, any dutch minor is good, as you can turn into the Netherlands. Especially Brabant with its french/dutch cultures.


The key part for a successful colonization when playing a non-historical colonizer, is to bash Portugal and Spain early and often. Early on, Portugal is weak but has many explorers, so you can attack them every ten years or so, take the capital (and maps) and all colonies/TPs you can. Do the same to Spain starting in 1495-1500 (and take Andalusia when the CoT and shipyards appear). A good move is then to force-vassalize Portugal, and DA them a bit later, to get Tago's CoT and other rich provinces.

I like Navarra for that, which has both iberian (which improves the method I described above) and french culture and can become France (to get the explorers and conquistadors ; but then, you're playing as France).

Ah, certainly because of the valueable action of portuguese missionaries.

Edit: just remembered, Naples or a Big Milan (maybe KoI) are probably good italian colonizers also. Naples is bound to have good relations with Spain and can get maps I guess.

In my recent game I did a lot of colonizing with Tuscany and later with Byzantine

Norway can be a good colonizer. No enemies to really worry about on the home front, if you take care of Sweden.

Sweden is very decent. You can colonize big parts of the far north reaches of America (you'll have England for company, though).

Don't bet on getting maps that way, from my experience the colonisers don't like to give maps (especially Spain and Porto)... Instead it would be better to go and raid their capitals once in a while...

Since Paradox and crew are Swedish. People joke about Paradox making Sweden more powerful than historically or giving special benefits, i.e. causing a CTD if you try to conquer them.

Vyjanagar or what ever it's called is a nice option. Grab all of India before the Europeans come to spoil your work
Also, for an African empire, one cannot forget Morroco and Oman. Also, if you can break the landlock with the uzbeks you might want to start working on siberia once you get landtech 31 or, by some freakish accident, a conquistador :rofl:
If you'd like a Siberian adventure, you can conquer the uzbeks with one of other mongol states while going free trade/narrowminded (or even naval if you want to kick yourself in the groin) and, again, work Siberia up. This can also be done with Poland/Poland-Lithuania but it might take longer to conquer your way to Siberia than to reach land 31... dont forget, the krauts and the ruski's also hate you

And then there's also china, which can get siberia from the other end, but china's economy is unbreakable so any human player with china generally owns big time anyway. Only another human with a reasonably strong country (aka Castille/Spain, France, England) can put up a fight.
