Almost every single gun on the Human LV can fire forward though, but the issue is of course what type of weapons they are.
Human forward-fire is excellent. You can't have all energy or all ballistics though.
Speed is good on the human LV as well.

It's possible to use all energy, it's a little tricky, but it's possible.

If you know how to edit the save game you can use
UPDATE player_techs SET state=6 WHERE player_id = 1
to flag all techs for the player as researched, not sure if there are techs in the table that should be unresearchable. At least it didn't crash my game and i had the full tree researched.
I have reason to believe that researching the drive techs that don't belong to your (Ex: if I am Liir and I enable Node drive), it causes a crash; or at least it did in one of the older builds.

The Tech Unlocker seems better, don't need to click through them all and if the research is implemented properly by the dev's then it works.
Weird. For me it crashes every time I or any of the AIs run into a random. 100% of the time.I have no idea how to edit the save files.
The newest patch though crashes if I don't have the encounters on.
