Best fictional map; tips needed

Starting the dicussion again.

The original question was: I am looking for similiar maps as the maps in the Vanilla versions. Criteria:
Fictional
A lot of variety
Not looking like someone used the map editor for the foirst time (no offense)
Comprehensve
Modest but good amount of highway and railway
Realistic looking.

Please add new and previous suggestions,

Nice one.

The only thing I do not understand is why the highway is not connected?


There are 4 different highways that need to be connected during the game.

I've been trying to decide on a map for a large permanent, organic creation and just have not been able to make up my mind. I may have just found my home.

DK115, you forgot to add at least a little bit challenging to your criteria. ;)

I agree, I have a "but" though: It can be overdone. There is a reason why there no big cities in the middle of the Sahara or on Antartica. Therefore I do not like maps who are on the wrong side of a challenge :)

Your maps looks ok. I will try them.

On Caradoc Sound: I like the map. Fits all the criteria.

My points: A bit too much highway and maybe railway too. All on the leftside, is that needed? Less is more :)

And also on the starting square: Highway could have been till the bridge, now there is a ugly part coming in the square. And why is the starting square diagonal? I realy like the way the railway in positioned!

On Morwenna Estuary:

I like the starting position! One tiny point: again less is more on highway and railways, imho. This is in my list.

On on Buthek Delta: a bit too much islands.

On Four Falls: I realy like this map. But as always, a point: the starting square is a bit too far north. You are forced to buy squares (if you want to stick to 9 tiles) a certain way in order to use the island completely. Would be good if the starting point is directly next to the island. It is on my list.

Darkest woods: for some reason it does not feel natural enough. Especially the rivers in and around the starting square.

On Dire Straits. Also a good map. I like the little island.
But of cousrse some points :). Railway is the first square is OK, but having them later on, and need to plan accordingly is for me plus. The rivers in the north part of the starting square need some work, I think. The are really shallow now. And using both the big island and main land is a challenge with 9 tiles, But that would also be the fun of it.

I like a decent amount of highway and railway on my maps (including the max connections), as I like my cities to have a 'hub' feel once they have grown, plus for it's easier to delete extra rail-road and highway in the map editor than it is to add it in: downloaded maps can be easily tweaked.

Hey! And cheers for the feedback! First of seems I've misread the railroad part. Thought it said starting area needed to have railroad and not just a general connection, the more you know. Otherwise I do agree with you that it's nice not to get everything right in the middle from the start, but I guess some people might just want to expand directly onto the island and then they would be mad if the railroad was further away. And secondly I'm assuming you're talking about where the river meets the bay? Looks like there has been a smooth-tool accident there, I'll look into it at some point when I feel confident in my updating-skills. But yeah thanks for the input mate!
