I have paired xenophobe with materialist so far which seems strong, but I have also been thinking about authoritative or militarist. What ethics do you like to pair with materialist?

If you strongest, then go authoritarian with slaver guilds. Using indentured servitude for specialist jobs allows you to get worker bonuses for your researchers and metallurgists, which is absurdly strong, and they also barely require any pop upkeep. Hopefully it will get fixed eventually, but for now it's insanely strong.

Authoritarian is the strongest companion to pretty much any other fanatic ethic just because of how bonkers OP indentured servitude is (not to mention the +worker pop output, which goes with that, and the flat +influence, which is always needed).

Technocracy + slavers guild is very strong
Technocracy + egalitarian for utopian abundance synths is also strong (but less), with egalitarian go oligarchy though.
Would it be worth it to go xenophobic early game to quickly expand, and then reform your government in the mid game to authoritarian?

Probably not, just because ethics swapping is so expensive. Authoritarian also gives you +influence, and with slaver guilds, you'll have 40% of your pops (more as soon as you acquire some slave species) consuming 0 CGs and producing 15% more (+5 from auth, +10 from slaver guilds) from day 1, which will increase fairly quickly (in particular, the extended shifts edict+tradition from domination will give another +30% output to all slaves; for authoritarian slavers, domination is a great second or third pick after expansion or supremacy), which largely compensates for xenophobe bonuses for getting a strong start.

I think it's probably a wash, but take decadent + deviant as a species trait (goes excellent with robot users) to ensure that you have a big enough authoritarian faction.

The Authoritarian Slavers Guild bonus is very strong early game so I'd say you're better off with it than cheaper star bases. Just expand slightly slower. And when you can turn neighbors into protectorates, integration is faster and cheaper. (both in terms of alloys and influence!)

With Necrophages, there's a stronger argument for Xenophobe because it allows you to purge aliens into more of your primary species. With a normal empire Authoritarian for Slaver Guilds is the clear 2nd best to Fan Mat for Technocracy, and happily you can have both.
Regarding xenophobe, note that it prevents you from ever giving robots full citizenship rights, which always irritates me as a flavour thing when I synth ascend.

You have the question the wrong way around. It's "What to pair with Authoritarian?" because yes, it's that strong.

And the answer is, "Whatever you want, Authoritarian slave guilds and stratified economy is so stupid broken that any other choice you make is sauce for the goose."

fanatic pacifist?

I've never been able to finish a fanatic pacifist game, pacifist sure, nothing like spreading democracy & religion peacefully via liberation wars, but FP? such a snooze fest lol.
I've done it just to see the AI ascend and build megastructures; in most of my games I conquer them well before that happens. Huge galaxy with reduced empire numbers helps with that; lots to explore and plenty of space to expand even without wars.

It would have to be materialist as 10 percent extra research speed is great along with less robot upkeep. Plus it allows you to take the technocracy civic, which by itself it likely better than fanatic spiritualist for unity production not to mention extra research directors.
