Brazil/Mexico/Argentina (You can watch the war protected by US and wage war in south america going facist/comunist. Small scale war mostly with infantary to learn the basics and how to improve troops and make them work better). Also their limitations make it a good training ground to test National focus, leadership and how to build and maintain a industry working.

Later on you can play with planes and ships without a real oposition and see how effective they are in giving bonus to your troops.

Later on you can move to Italy or Great Britain. Both will force you to use Air and Naval units but are quite safe as long you keep your bordes protected. Air and ships will face medium to heavy oposition from allies and will give a good challenge to finally learn to use them to maximum eficiency.

Later you can play anything. Learned to build, research and use the equipements its just a matter of adapting your strategy to your country.

I am a newcomer to HOI 4 and I have no idea which country I have to play as a beginner. Can you guys give me some suggestion?

Italy is the tutorial country. Brazil has the ability to take over South America relatively unmolested, which gives you the chance to learn the ropes without needing to get involved in the main war.

Always liked playing Italy but it was always annoying it started with binary divisions :( And you always got invaded by the US later on if you sided with Germany (unless they defeated England before then, which they never did).

But I would agree with Italy, the tutorial uses them after all so you might as well do that.

While having a soft spot for Italy either, i assume that Hungary makes for a good nation to play as a beginner. You aren't in the heat of the fighting but you can build up over time and try to impact the general course of the war. Territorial gains are also within sight for you.

If favoring the Allies, Brazil is fairly big for an initially neutral nation.

If you refrain from being inclined to go for the Axis or Allies and want to watch while having potential for getting strong over time, i would suggest Sweden. PDox certainly hasn't made them weak... At least one can execute their wrath upon Denmark (which remains a mystery to me as of yet).

From what I can tell from the previews, if you play on standard, Bhutan, Luxemburg, Latvia, Lithuania, Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Bolivia, Guyana, Nepal, Oman, Yemen.

As a new player you can expect to become a regional superpower with these by the end of the war. If you want to paint the entire map you either need a couple of more hours in the game or play a slightly larger power like Austria, Hungary or Portugal.

You can't be serious about this. OP said that he is a beginner. Playing any of the mentioned European minor/micro powers he would experience exactly one combat and a lasting frustration afterwards...

Australia might be an option. Gets in the war early but is well protected from attacks by its "down under" position and should have decent starting industry.

Given that Quill hasn't played very well and he owns half the map... I'd say Turkey or Albania would be challenging beginner countries. You could go Mexico, change to facist and reconquer the lands america took if you wanted an easy game...

Italy, Germany, larger nation in South America, or possibly the US. Thinking that starting out playing as a tiny nation in HOI isn't really productive as you won't learn as much about the game. I'd usually recommend going a larger nation, and be prepared to lose but learning plenty along the way. Then when you feel prepared you can go with whatever you feel like.

Best of luck!

Spain is usually the best for learning how warfare works during the civil war. You can't really mess up the armament as there is none. Then after you can focus on arming to your pleasure, as if you stay out of factions you should remain neutral until you choose otherwise.

I'd avoid the major powers, there is a lot going on there. I found it easiest to learn the basics with Brazil. Nice contained area to operate in. Noone too powerful to contend with and you can ignore naval power altogether to begin with. Lets you learn as you play rather than being overwhelmed by masses of stuff on day one. Also start in 1936. :)

I think he's being sarcastic about how easy these nations apparently are to play in HOI4 ;).

Hi, first of all: Awesome therad and thank you for the input, everyone. I have HOI 3 and had 2 as well, but only really played a few hours. I thought about using Brazil (and Italy since it is the tutorial nation)
Problem with Brazil was for me, that I got attacked by the USA, when I attacked more than 2 nations in South America. Was this normal, or just bad luck? Cause I don't really want to deal with the USA on my own in my first game again.
