Best country for a newbie to play

Portugal for its optional call into the hundred years war, and starting out with explorers allowing you to discover the new world and Africa before picking the idea. (Not to mention, Castile can be a strong ally once they unite Iberian Spain)

England also seems very doable, once you have ended the war - either by letting go of some of your french territory (And possibly retaking it later on), or ending the war with a white peace. They have plenty of things to do with uniting the Isles, and are in a position to discover the Americas early on if they manage to steal Iceland from Denmark/Norway.

In EU3 that was Castille. Great position for colonization, strong enough to play warfare, and rich. Probably still the best choice in EU4.

Whoever you play, I recommend not stressing too much about it and playing for 50 years or so to get a hang of the mechanics, then restart as someone else. It is a very complex game, and you will definitely take a play-through or two to get used to it. So don't worry about messing up.

As others have said, Castille, Portugal and England are all fairly safe countries. I wouldn't recommend a country outside Europe to begin with. Its a Euro-centric game, so many of the non-European countries can have limited options and be a bit dull unless you know what you are doing.

I'll go for the majority and say Portugal for really inexperienced players, or Castile for those who are better but could use some refresher training/EU4 experience.

I personally learned how to play EU3 after repeated failed games as Muscovy.

I suggest Serbia.

Might as well start with your favourite country out of the top dogs in England, France, and Castile/Spain. Because once you get better at the game they won't be as enjoyable. A good primer I did in EU3 was to start in 1492 with Columbus in Spain and do a little exploring. Nothing quite like discovering the Americas for the first time!

Hmm true. I think I started with Sweden in Europa Universalis and in that game, Sweden wasn't a mere puppet of Denmark at the start, IIRC ?
