thats a good choice.

if i play a majpr i usually ally with useful minors, and usually vassalise them and then annex them peacefully as game goes on. when my BB too gets high i often like to make good friends wiht another major just to cut down the odds against me. money talks.

I like to ally with countries that get into lots of wars...i.e. France, Spain, Austria, and Poland. Gives me an excuse to take territory without declaring war myself.

Well, obviously it depends whom I'm playing, but the general rule is Whomever Is Most Useful. There are two types of "most useful" to be considered. First is those countries most useful to have fighting by my side; usually the largest power I can find who is my enemy's enemy. Second (in exposition only, not in importance:D ) is those countries I want to vassalize so that I can peacefully annex them. There were a lot of these in my English AAR, the jewel of the crown being Sweden; in my upcoming Russian one, there will probably only be Pskov.

Minor countries usually have a strong army, and won't declare war to their neighbours very often.

As France, I'd say Savoy. As any other European country, I'd go with Brandenburg, Saxony or Bavaria. :)

I ally with those who are closest to me. By that I mean geographicaly as well as culturaly... because honestly, that's the way it should be :).

If I'm playing a minor, I'll usually run the whole gamut....as Lorraine, for example, I'll invariably start with an alliance with France, grow at Spain's expense, then buddy up with Spain, leave the French alliance, and grow at France's expense, then later still, form up my own alliance with German minors to peacefully annex later, and possibly inviting some of the middling powers into the mix (ie - if Austria gets pasted and stuck as sort of a second rate power, or if Denmark gets pegged by Sweden, I'll add them to my collection too).

What about Ryazan?

I'm playing Russia now, and I've actually allowed Ryazan to continue to exist thusfar (1650s, as my vassal of course), just because it amuses me to see it on the political map. Also becuase their "monarch" is City Council, I like that. Though I'm kind of pissed that they're ahead of me in tech!

Georgia's another possibility for Russian diploannexation, though they're usually taken out pretty quickly by Turkey.

I once played England and allied with Saxony, Brandenburg and Pommernia and they honestly were like parana's. They ate half of P-L and they were a good deterrent for other rival nations.:D

Is Ryazan added in IGC (which I don't have yet)? and Georgia, I forgot all about them:eek: ; I've started sending my rare diplomats and rarer cash to them.

Yeah, Ryazan is in the IGC, they have 3 provinces that in the original GC belonged (I think) to Kazan.

The paucity of diplomats is one of the most frustrating things about playing Russia! Even after money in no longer a problem, improving relationsis very difficult because there's no one to take it anyhwere. :(
