Interstellar Dominion/Executive Vigor are my favorites. I would prefer executive vigor if late game benefits were more important.
As it is Interstellar Dominion seems to do the most for the important early part of the game.

Shared Destiny is a decent pick if you want to conquer a lot early though. As it is claiming an AIs homeworld and integrating the rest later seems efficent even without it.
Systems without colonies seem to cost next to nothing when you integrate a vassal and while GA AIs blob somewhat they tend to have a lot of undeveloped systems.

After seeing these reply I noticed that my least choice are others best choice. Some people are completely opposite than my play-style, very intriguing.

Mastery of nature is the strongest out of all the options in the slot, followed closely by nihilistic acquisition, executive vigor, and interstellar dominion. MoN (and to a lesser extent EV) suffer from having little impact when you first pick them but scale extremely well as the game goes on, while NA and ID start off super powerful but end up falling off as the game progresses, and technological ascendency is just meh all game long, so you have an interesting choice between power now and power later there.

So you wasted a perk ?Why not take on that gives you an early game advantage?

How ?In 2.2 It gives you no early game benefit ,planets can grow for decades without needing to remove a single tile blocker and they take even longer to fill up.Getting two extra districts won't change or benefit your early gameplay at all .The decision is usefull for the mid and late game and by that point you should have the ecumenopolis perk which is far better.

nihilistic acquisition
Is useless you can just conquer plaents if you want slaves and if you really want to raid you can pick the civic without wasting a perk.

Which makes it a bad first perk if you only need to it by the midgame then only take it once you reach the midgame and take a perk that gives you an immediate advantage.

technological ascendency is just meh all game long,
Tech speed is everything in stellaris it makes or breaks the game....saying that extra tech speed is bad is just ridiculous .It gives you a massive advantage for the entire game

Well if you find a way to take it first then I would say voidborne. You can technically take it first if you have the tech, but on the other hand waiting with taking your first AP until you have the tech is not worth it.

I like one vision because I can take advantage of the passive help throughout the game. If I have a diverse empire I can get them to fall in line more easily, and I can use the unity boost to finish traditions faster and use the powerful unity edits once I finish the tradition trees.

You can't always conquer planets. You may not have the influence for it, have a liberation wars policy, or be fighting in a very large war that includes allies who have claimed them.

As for comparing it to a civic. Well Barbaric despoilers requires you to commit to it at the beginning of the game. It also comes with downsides, notably including the innability to sign migration treaties. You also only get three civics. Yes Ascension perk slots are finite, but you get 8 of them. And honestly, I usually don't particularly care what the last 2 or 3 Ascension perks I choose are. I can easily fit something like Nihilistic Acquisition in if I want it.

Stellaris is not other 4Xs. Research is not the game winning strategy. Economy is. And once you understand the tech card system it is actually fairly easy to get all the important techs fairly quickly.

Interstellar dominion. Becouse when i unlock first slot my main expense is building starbases. So if i can build them more that is biggest gain.
Executive vigor is close second pick.

Nobody answered Consecrated Worlds yet, huh? That perk is really strong. I pick it 1st when I play spiritualist. Othwerwise 10% research speed is "always ok" option.

Voidborne and new Xeno-Compatibility are my favorites for a tall game, but I seldom wait for them. Tech speed is nice as well. Longer edicts save tons of resources.

My main problem with all perks is that after awhile getting them takes ages, and getting anything but Voidborne puts ascendancy finishers and Master Builders too far away. Add Galactic Wonders and life's getting even harder. Almost every system can get few (or plenty of) habitats while everything affecting planets is wasted on them.

Current implementation of administrative cup makes it hard to justify old-day conquest when new acquisitions ended up in sectors, so ID isn't for me. Getting vassals is influence-free and claiming a system or two isn't that expensive influence-wise. Again, habitats are more appealing to me as a conqueror.

I tend to hold onto the ability to grab the first ascension perks and go for key traditions I enjoy. Simply because I try to make my first ascension perk voidborn so my third one can be master builders and fourth galactic wonders.
