What are the benefits of upgrading buildings. I mean aside from the obvious reasons, like researching new weapons, and opening up other building options. What about trading posts, why upgrade. I know they shoot arrows, but does it increase the gold received?

Increased HP (handy), ability to defend itself from most attackers like imps, ratman and similar that attack structures (also nice).
Don't want to loose them easily to raiders after all.

But no, no increase in gold-output (or decreased spawnrate).

Analad, try something called "reading".

Villainstone didn't mention HP as reason for upgrade, so Chien pointed that to him. Wasn't about Trading Posts at all.

I have to say, aside from towers, trading posts and the latest mission I gotta agree with Chien not many buildings get torn down in SP.

Ah yes them. I forgot about them. Silly peasants. Fleas in the skin of the King ;P.

Well, maybe they just like to deposit their "droppings" and dirty water nearby home, disregarding the stench, giant killing monsters and lifethreatning situations.

Interesting. During early stages of information there were mentions of lvl 2 caravans getting armed escorts, but that obviously didn't make the final game.

Gotta check wheter the HP thing happens.

EDIT:
*Scrolls through the manual* Where does it say that actually? Can't find it...

Actually it wasn't the manual it was the website. I corrected my other post to prevent confusion. You can read about it here: http://www.majesty2.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=63&Itemid=136

Can someone verify if caravans really do get extra HP from an upgraded trading post? That same page also talks about trading posts selling potions which isn't true so I don't know how reliable it is.

I figured the website was wrong, thanks for verifying. The website also mentions teleportation portals for our heroes and under the character section it mentions warriors fighting stone elementals. Either a lot of things were cut from the final game or they planned for an expansion pack and the writers got ahead of themselves. Ice mages, goblins, portals, potions in trading posts, stone elementals, the list goes on and on. It makes me wonder if it was a conscious decision to not include these features or if the developers ran into problems and couldn't implement them in time for the game's release.

The website states that caravans aspects should change. As far as I remember, (I checked this), the aspect does not change with the upgrade.
So hinting at no actual change.

Might come from MP requirements.
The whole trading post stuff was supposed to work a different way.
Trading posts caravans were to convey a part of the amount of gold obtained through potions sales (website) (cant remember well if the gold was supposed to be fully transported to the market which retains only a portion or the caravan transporting only a part of it from the start, does not matter though)
Currently, trading post gold is standard generated.

Much more easier to balance for MP as players know what locations are the most profitable for them and their opponent.

As the heroes display an addiction to potions, with the previous design, a trading post located just outside down could have generated much more gold than a trading post located at the opposite of the town on the map.
Ruining the preset location for trading posts which is intended to get players to fight for map control.

Still; Trading Post selling healing potions would be nice.
Except for the whole "tax collectors go wild" routine remote Inns already have (darn not have the option to switch off the collector-route)
