Benefit of ransoming your relatives/vassals/courtiers ?

We saw in the stream that the AI will accept giving gold and ransoming its relatives/vassals/courtiers.

As i understand there is no opinion hit to let them in prison and keep the gold. In CK2 you could ignore them completely.

Other than pure RP, what is the motivation for the player to ransom his/her relatives/vassals/courtiers in CK3?

Relatives can give warscore, and they'll get a stress and health hit as long as they are in the dungeon. You also can't use them, so you won't be able to secure that alliance with your neighbour if you daughter is in a dungeon somewhere.
Vassals and courtiers can be your councillors or your knights. Those you'd want to ransom.

Of course, if you don't care about the characters, you can let them stay in the dungeon. After all, they can't threaten you from there.

The courtiers that end up captured will often be valued councillors or knights. Considering the only cost a pittance to ransom if they are not landed nobles or family members, I can see it make sense to pay 10 gold to keep that 21 prowess knight around.

At least if highly skilled courtiers are harder to come by than in CK2, where you could quickly use medieval Google to find 20+ martial commanders who are willing to travel around the world to die in your service.

Your son might have been captured and be your heir (or in elective systems *any* relative might be your best heir).

Ransoming a prisoner stops them being recruited by their captor and possibly used as an agent against you, or they might be recruited and their claims used against you.

Your relative, vassal, or courtier might have a valuable claim you want to use or deny someone.

They might be a councillor or one of your better commanders.

There should be Prestige penalty per vassal/courtier captured. Also, if at all possible - I don't have access to the game so don't know how it works - the player might face the chance of losing important characters such as non landed advisors or knights as possible punishment for sitting on their toes. Also the family should place pressure on the player to get the prisoners of the same bloodline.

The primary duty of a liege-lord is to protect his or her vassals. Having a vassal be imprisoned and/or his land occupied by enemy forces should thus give a steady loss of Prestige to that character's liege.

Really, it depends entirely on if you care about the character. They could be an heir you have groomed or an unmarried daughter. Also, it is now harder to find skilled courtiers so if one gets captured it might to worth paying the relatively small ransom. Of course if you don't care about them then you don't need to pay.

Paradox have stated that living dynasty members add renown to your dynasty (with an extra bonus if they are the top ruler of the dynasty, or the spouse of a ruler). Now this is pure guesswork on my side, but I would imagine that a dynasty member rotting away in a foreign dungeon does not add much renown to their dynasty, heh. :)

But thats a good point. Renown/Prestige penalty is something that make sense.

I think I may have confused renown with prestige for the dynast, because according to development diary #1, Dynasties & Houses, "The Dynast also gains prestige for every living member of the Dynasty."

Those numbers are interesting, though - where are they from? :)

Which means we will inevitably get someone complaining there is not enough support for building a "tall" dynasty. :rolleyes:

You get extra renown for dynasty members who are rulers or spouses of rulers so there is even tall dynasty building, heh. :)
