France pretty much condemnded itself to lose by squabbling amongst themselves, thereby weakening the country, and picking incompetents to lead their armed forces. I think the reason the french troops were so much better in 1944 was that they were under competent leadership, both political and militarily. I don't know that they were better than the US soldiers, but if they were, could it be because they were fighting on their own soil?

Barkdreg, one correction.... IIRC Degrelle fled to Switzerland at first. Might be wrong though.

And yes, Degrelle was by far the worst collaborator. The VNV also collaborated, but when De Clercq died and Hendrik Elias took over, the VNV more or less moderated. Elias wanted to stop the collaboration alltogether, but lacked the inner strenght to do it.
The heaviest collaboration Flemish group would've been DeVlag of Jef Van de Wiele... They were real National-Socialists.

How could I forget about Van De Wiele, he was as bad as Degrelle but on a smaller scale. It could be Degrelle fled to Switzerland first, many colaborators and nazi's fled to Switzerland and the Vatican before they moved to other places.
