Being able to upgrade a ship to a different name

I find it super annoying that I cannot add an information on (or correct a) ship name without creating a new model altogether. When I have multiple models, I'm then unable to upgrade my current ships without losing them all to another model. The other day, while trying to add an information to my models, I transformed my whole fleet into point defense ships, which in turn lead to a war against another empire since I appeared so weak.

So, it would be good to be able to link a previous model to a model of another name. Maybe you could even make it possible to upgrade a corvette into a destroyer and so on.
