as i understand it a possessed person can either
1) just have the possessed trait
2) have the bonus you described
3) have a malus (something like "the devil is talking to me") which does the opposite

One of my metropolitans was possessed. He had 7 martial, but after some time he'd got the "Jesus Gives Military Advice" bonus, bumping him up to 27.
He's my marshal for around 10 years now. The guy raped a few women (allegedly at least) and has taken my heir prisoner, but after some negotiations we're still best friends.
Its usually more bad than good but yes, it has some good things. This divide becomes even more extremely if your possessed character sees a 'Holy Comet', after which he can roll special traits that give him -20s (Speaking in Tongues) or +20s (Military Jesus).
Highest Martial character I had had 49 martial thanks to that, but it was back when it was a mostly useless stat

In Medieval times there was good possession and bad possession. You could be possessed by the Holy Ghost, like say Jeanne D'Arc, or you could be possesed by a devil (or even the Devil), like all those vampires and werewolves which stalked the country.
Good Possession was positive (well seen to be) and Bad Possession was a negative.
