Been months since DoD release and I'm still confused

Regarding: upgrading equipment.

So, for example, in my current game I've replaced all my Panzer II's with Mark III's and IV's. I produced a lot of Panzer II's knowing that I would eventually convert them into Wespe armored artillery. I produced enough to ensure that all the panzer divisions would have them.

So, I research Wespes. I go to produce them. I hit the little button to upgrade the Panzer II's to Wespes and I can only convert - oddly - the Panzer I's. The Wespes were a DEVELOPMENT of the Panzer II to keep the chassis viable rather than create a whole new armored unit type.

I have also played games in the past, before the WTT game, where I could upgrade previous level tanks, arty and planes to the next level. That doesn't totally make sense, of course. How a Panzer IV can turn into a Panther, I don't know. But now I can't do that. It seems that conversions are rare now or something.

So, what do I need to do to build Wespes? What about Whirbelwinds? Do you make those with Panther or Mark IV chassis (Mark IV is historic/logical. The Coelion would have been the next AA tank.)

You can only upgrade models marked as obsolete. Panzer I, being LT1, is marked as obsolete automatically when Panzer II, LT2, is researched. LT2 is not automatically marked as obsolete when MT1 (or higher) is researched, only when LT3 is researched. You can manually mark models as obsolete in the production menu (it is an easily missed circle above the button used to upgrade the stats on a tank/plane). So if you manually mark the Panzer II as obsolete you can then convert your Panzer IIs into Wespes. This also works with airplanes, if you mark the FW 190 as obsolete you can upgrade existing ones into the FW 190 A (or FW 190 B or whatever your latest model is).

It is absolutely one of those things that makes sense after the fact, but isn't explained very well. The whole obsolete classification is not explained well at all in game. Here's hoping this helps with your enjoyment of the game!
