An event called "joining the civilized world" will show up (fires randomly with an offset IIRC of 30 days meaning that it shouldn't take more than 30 days. Sometimes, however, you'll have to save and reload if the event doesn't show up) and then you're civilized and can do everything civilized nations do.

but does Japan have a civilizing 'event'? Or is it time for spam MW-ocity?

(iirc, the MW is the highest mil score of all the early/starting units?)

Never mind. I was irritated by yet another spammer. Instead of just banning the guy and leaving the spam, which is what has been done recently, they removed the entire post just to make me look bare-faced silly, no doubt.

The mods like to pick on me. I can't imagine why.

No where is a definitive statement of all the issues of being uncivilized.

Uncivs were nerfed to prevent Japan from giving away a province to Korea in order to start a war. Block of an exploit, in other words.

What about if one accepts the Dutch letter early in the game, and then fights for independence? Does the Meiji event still fire? is that the only way to 'get' civilization, (besides earning it)?

And are MW the highest mil score?

When you accept that dutch letter you won't get the Meiji restoration.

I think brigaded (either hussar or the other one, can't remember the name) cavalry is the most cost efficient way to get military points as an unciv. Each division is worth 0.1875 military points.

there is a research to enable you to open the 'joining the civilized wolrd' event, i think its the 'martket structure' in commerce and there is also one in the industry research.

Those are in VIP only. And there's a whole bunch of techs you need there, rather than the old prestige, industry, military score requirement.
