Secret to warscore againt Catholic crusades? Before HF at least you could siege papal holdings for 100%, no matter how many joiners. Don't know if that glitch is valid any longer though.
It's not a glitch and it still works. Take Rome, pillage everything, and then give it back to Pope. Take Pope's other counties. Next Crusade can be done with a breeze.

Thanks for confirming. How do you as non-catholic give back the pillaged province of Rome to the pope, I wonder?

Taqiyya of course. Become a Catholic for a day.

For extra points, steal 3% MA while doing so; Become a Catholic "secretly" first but convert back to your own religion openly. Get 75 free tech points again if your original religion was Sunni.

Well worth the 500 prestige you spent for it.

You can buy a favor from African waifu and changing religion as the western African. Then to change religion as
the attacker. Just lost some piety, with no land losing. That happened on the targeting AI pagan ruler with deceitful trait. Or just change the religion by right click the big J city.

Alternatively, if you don't like changing religion, then you can give Rome to a nobody and grant him independence. He will be conquered by Pope pretty soon.

Cool! Then I did not miss a legit way to hand it to another religion's head :)

But is total 500 prestige really enough to secretly convert to catholic(Ie remain true to Sunni and secretly be Catholic) and revert to openly Sunni? Is there another path back than "Renounce secret religion"?

In your case, you are the religious head right? Who else would you like to pay you?

The same magical source of all wealth that pays the crusading Catholics. :)

The Crusader pot is boosted beyond all reason, and a large realm participating can easily get over 100K in a single Crusade. Most of that money does not come from actual donations, but is generated out of thin air. For example, literally every barony sieged down adds a predetermined amount to the pot.

Though I agree it´s overly boosted, the source is atleast there. It´s the rich clergy including the Pope himself, the holy orders, the monastic order etc. In case you are both the head and the target, there is no such source.
And not even the Pope is paying you to defend against a GHW. Not even asking/demanding you to join, actually. He don't care.

This is conjecture, though. There's nothing in the game to indicate that the Pope or rich clergy are the source of most of this wealth. Especially since their wealth stays the same while the Crusade pot increases. :)

Besides, why not have the rich clergy of the other religions contribute massive wealth to a "GHW pot" ?

And not even the Pope is paying you to defend against a GHW. Not even asking/demanding you to join, actually. He don't care.

This would be a good point if the GHWs of the Pagans, Muslims, et cetera paid like Crusades do. But they don't. Crusades are a mechanic unique to Catholic and Fraticelli that pay outrageously enormous dividends, where even a decent participation can turn minor regional realms into superpowers purely through the massive cash rewards the Crusades offer.

Not that I actually want to see GHWs pay like Crusades, though. What I'd like to see is Crusade rewards greatly nerfed. And I don't say this out of bias: I almost always play as a Catholic myself.

Yeah, the first time I got involved in a crusade I thought that the game glitched on me when I looked at my wealth. That's a game-breaking level reward, to be honest, and it should probably be nerfed. More rewards for a successful defense would be nice since it would be a great achievement to drive back the combined forces of another religion.

  • Secretly convert to temporary_faith (pay 250 piety)
  • Openly adopt temporary_faith (free)
  • Do your temporary_faith actions (preferably without unpausing*)
  • Adopt the faith of your capital county (right-click on your portrait) (pay 500 prestige, gain 250 piety, temporary_faith -3% MA, new faith +3% MA)
* If you unpause, any hired holy orders will depart on the very next day. The longer you let the game run while having temporary_faith, the more likely it is that randomly-generated courtiers in your realm (including new bishops/mayors) will be of temporary_faith.

Some of that money has to be coming out of loot, though, surely? Crusaders were notorious for killing everyone and taking all their stuff.

That may very well be, but then it's pretty odd that a) the level of loot they get widely outstrips that of actual raiders who are engaged in actual raiding, and b) that no other religion can ever do it.

I agree that the enormous stacks of free cash out of thin air should be pared down drastically.

Getting 30,000+ gold for a couple month's fighting in the 10th century when my annual income as a king is about 300 gold is just....wrong.
