Little bored last night, so I thought I might, like write somethin...
Late at night, laying in bed and cant sleep…damn my eyes! What to do? TV? 51 channels and nothing on, what again? Switch on the computer and fire up the game?….but who? Who to guide to victory and steer to the road of glory or lead to defeat and ignominity? Browsing the nations I click on Norway…something different, someone I haven’t played…country description…
Ahh of course! The once feared and powerful Vikings, a mere mention of their name sent terror and blood curdling dread through the minds of those who heard it, before they ran for the hills clutching what precious belonging they could carry. Now (1419) a faint, distant shadow of themselves, poor, pathetic, without respect, faces tuned towards the ground only seeking death.
I take a quick look at the event and leader files…one lonely event “End of the Kalmar Union” option A Denmark inherits Norway…NEVAR!!!....Leaders…few land leaders - all pathetic, though leaders none the less and could be useful stealing sieges. A couple of good admirals, though they appear much later on. (EU2 Vanilla 1.09, Very hard / Furious)

and this is what confronts me…10k troops (1k over limit), 10 warships, 7 transports, 50 ducats, all techs at level one, 2 poor - 2 medium provinces, 3 crap colonies and 2 trading posts that would cost a small fortune to develop, allied to Denmark - Sweden, vassalage to Denmark and to top it off…practically useless sliders (next to useless troops that cost an arm and a leg) Inf = 13d, Cav = 29d
First things first, one step closer towards offensive troops (Everybody knows the best defence is offence and that its either them or me, annihilate or be annihilated), purchase a baliff in the capital, begin researching infra 2, 50% military maintenance and move religious slider 100% on Catholic and 50% on Sunni. Let’s begin…
Five days in and my ally Sweden declares war on Novogrod. I humbly accept to go, sending 1000 infantry to the cause, in the hope that they may gain a colony or two for my fledgling nation.
As you can see, the financial summary tells a sad story. So the 8000 infantry and 1000 cavalry remaining are loaded onto the ships, bound for Western Europe and a new war.
April 21st, the ships arrive off the coast of Holland and war is declared on Burgundy, her allies England and Aragon join the war. Denmark stands firm by their vassal, however Sweden dishonours the alliance, forever lost to the friendship of the Norwegies. Meanwhile Kola has been captured and the remaining 785 men look certain to overrun Karelia, damn those 215 deserters, damn them to hell!
May 6th, the Western front is opened up as the small force lands on the beaches of Flanders and annihilates the 940 defending Burgundian cavalry stationed there, amazingly without a single casualty. The force is then split up, 1200 troops are sent to Calais and 2 x 1200 to Zeeland in order to torch the lands, denying the enemy of valuable crops and income, while our troops take spoil and contribute towards the royal coffers.
In Eastern Europe, the unfortified lands of Karelia have been seized and the tiny infantry army is ordered to retire to the Swedish owned territory of Savolaks until further orders. Norwegies do not have sufficient resources to pursue this front.
June 27th, 1000 enemy cavalry assemble in Zeeland and attack Norwegy forces there. Outnumbered 2.4 to 1, Burgundies fresh forces rout our frigid army, which flee back to Flanders. However, the loot gathered from these provinces has allowed us to purchase another baliff (this time in Bergenshus) with 33 ducats to spare.
July 1st, second diplomat is sent to Gelre is order to gain access to their lands so that the troops may be more readily supplied and so the navy may more easily blockade Burgundies lands.
September 16th, the Norwegy fleet has returned from home and now sits off the coast of Holland together with 29 Danish ships (these were seen loading troops earlier, so a landing is considered imminent). In the light of this information the main body of Norwegy forces lift the siege of Flanders to travel to Calais, leaving a small covering force in Flanders. Meanwhile the fleet is spilt in two and is put on the rotating duty of blockading, working in and out of Arnhem harbour.
September 26th, 3 English warships are sunk off Flanders by the combined Scandinavian fleet and a quick glance at the Eastern front bodes well. It is also noted at this time that Sweden has rejoined our alliance and our war on Burgundy.
October 1st, 1 English warship and 1 transport are sunk and the main body of Norwegies arrive in Calais.
October 3rd, 4000 Burgundian troops begin to leave Holland and still the Danish troops have not landed.
October 8th, another 3 English warships are sunk off Flanders and Swedish diplomats plea for military access, request denied!
December 1st, Danish troops still have not landed and nearly 8000 Burgundians wait in Zeeland. The main body of Norwegies are forced to retire back to Flanders, leaving a covering force in Calais.
December 5th, a further 6 English warships are sunk, seemingly for no Scandinavian casualties, hurrah!
December 16th, the main body arrive in Flanders once more and recommence the siege works.
February 6th 1420, after a long hard slog with 13 English warships and 5 transports, the Scandinavian fleet of 30 warships and 16 transports is victorious, sinking 3 warships and routing the others….still no Danish troops have landed.
March 4th, nearly 20k of Scottish troops led by Buchan Douglas are sited in Kent, heading for Calais, so the small covering force there are sent to Kent (hoping that they will not be in the same province by the end of the month). Meanwhile a small force is boarding the navy in anticipation of looting the now empty province of Holland.
April 4th, in finding Kent in flames and another large Scottish force approaching, the small army heads for Wessex in search of booty.
April 16th, Flanders falls to the Norwegies and England begs for peace, offering 195 ducats…it is not enough!
May 1st, Wessex is looted (invested in infra), the small army moves on to Bristol. Meanwhile it is noted the 7k odd Burgundy force in Zeeland is moving, perhaps to Brabant?
June 3rd, Bristol is looted, the ducats just make enough so a new baliff can be promoted. The small force pushes on, simultaneously with other Norweigies heading for Calais and Holland. It is noted that the Norwegies can cancel their servitude with Denmark (as it couldn’t earlier?) and do so, the yoke of bondage is cast off (relations are unaffected). Meanwhile the 8k of Burgundian forces are moving through Artois heading for their capital.
June 17th, a lonely English warship is sunk and the Frenchies agree upon a marriage between the beautiful daughter of our highest Wegie and the French King.
July 1st, the Kings coffers overflow with plunder, a new baliff is sponsored in our last province with ducats to spare and the Wegies continue to press forward. Wegie ancestors would be proud.
September 9th, a small Aragonese force lands in Ostlandet, the Wegie capital, the small Wegie army in England retreats from a skirmish with a much larger English force, while an armada of 42 French, Danish, Swedish and Wegie warships and 18 transports are on the verge of defeat against 13 English warships…also the siege of Zeeland has begun….and still no Danish troops have landed!
Oct 1st, Burgundy sign a peace pact with France, Burgundy cedes Artois to France.
Oct 3rd, the English navy rout the armada, suffering one loss. However no losses were recorded against the Wegies or her allies….also a royal marriage between a Wegie stallion and a Scottish mare was concluded.
Oct 23rd. the Wegie fleet is routed again in the North Sea, preferring to retreat, rather than fighting alone.
January 11th 1421, France signs a peace pact with England , ceding Vendee to England and Guyenne to Aragon.
January 26th, this is the Wegies response to England and Burgundies peace offers.
March 21st, Novogrod regain control of Karelia while the English fleet face almost certain defeat.
Late at night, laying in bed and cant sleep…damn my eyes! What to do? TV? 51 channels and nothing on, what again? Switch on the computer and fire up the game?….but who? The kingdom of Norway, united in the Viking era reached its greatest strength in the 13th century when Iceland and several islands in the North Sea were still under Norwegian rule. However after the ravages of the Black Plague in 1349 and 1350 the population in Norway was greatly reduced. The Norwegian nobility was greatly weakened by the catastrophe and became international rather than national in its orientation. In 1397 Norway entered the Union of Kalmar as Queen Margrete became queen of Norway following the death of the last Norwegian king Olav IV. Together with the other two nations Norway was at war with the Hansa in the 1420s and gradually succumbed to Danish influence and rule as the taxes from Norway were spent abroad. The Norwegian 'Riksraad' continued to elect foreign princes as kings including Christopher of Bavaria and finally Christian II of Denmark. By this time the Union of Kalmar was just an empty name and Norway had become an integral part of Denmark.
Perfect!
