Not only that ... I find it a bit worrying that so many people are concerned whether or not the sword can stand a forceful swing or hitting something. I was under the illusion that swords - in our day and age - ONLY was supposed to be a (fireplace) ornament. - Certainly not something to make forceful swings with and absolutely not anything you'd wanna hit anything/anyone with ... you DO know that if you hit something with a sword, that other thing might break as well ... right?

Now, even if we've got martial artists swarming the place, I am pretty sure the standard sword these sports are practiced with are made of wood and have a curved edge. - So obviosuly none of these people would want a straight edge European medieval metal sword to practice their sport with, right?
Especially since it's even called a crusader sword - which implies a sword used by fanatic christians to chop up heathens - mainly muslims - with.

The only conclusion I can come up with is that President Bush's scare campaign has worked a bit too well ....
Personally I'd say it looks as though Paradox has read the tendencies of the times very well, and as such has chosen a sword that is the only sane response to the violent sentiments that is appearent in the masses of the modern christian culture ...

I don't really think it's too much to ask that a sword, wallhanger or not, should be able to be waved back and forth in the air without breaking, really.

Personally I'd say it looks as though Paradox has read the tendencies of the times very well, and as such has chosen a sword that is the only sane response to the violent sentiments that is appearent in the masses of the modern christian culture ...

Oh? You don't think they might have chosen these particular swords based on the swords' association with the content of the game? :)

Yes us Martial artists use Bokkens for training and real swords for competition Kata. In my travels I have rarely met people who use Katana's on a regular basis for training. Swords are weapons, not ornaments, they can be used for either and thats the problem, any chuckle head can swing this sword and hurt themselves. These swords are very low quality, and secondly giving weapons to people who arent trained how to use them is never a good Idea...

Unless your a King and need a peasant army fast :D

Nice quip on Bush Sikker, dont want to miss an opportunity to make a political jab that has absolutely nothing to do with the topic :D

Not necessarily true. A longer rat tail tang can actually increase the swords ability to handle "swinging". Fluctuations in applied force, the force amplitude, will decrease as the rat tail acts like a spring. This in turn reduces the risk of shattering and failure due to fatigue.

If people want a real combat sword you have to goto a forge.

Actually there is an affordable alternative to get a real sword:

Museum Replicas

They start at around $200 for something simple in the way of a European-style historical replica, up into the outragious range for handmade katanas & such.

Yes, however they made sure that the swords would break should they be udes violently. Which I say is a good call since so many people appearently has plans on using them ... ;)

Main Entry: 1or·na·ment
Pronunciation: 'or-n&-m&nt
Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English, from Old French ornement, from Latin ornamentum, from ornare
1 archaic : a useful accessory
2 a : something that lends grace or beauty b : a manner or quality that adorns
3 : one whose virtues or graces add luster to a place or society
4 : the act of adorning or being adorned
5 : an embellishing note not belonging to the essential harmony or melody -- called also embellishment, fioritura

(from Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary]

I am not sure what you are trying to say with your post, but if are trying to hint at something along the lines that ornaments were for ships only, I included the above entry from a dictionary. As you can see from entry 2 anyting that makes any given thing look better is an ornament.

Well, in case I completely failed to comprehend your post, ignore the above

And since you use katanas you don't need a sword like this for those competietions. And therefore THAT cannot be used as an argument that this 'crusader sword' should be able to withstand forceful swings and blows.

Well, that's where I think you are wrong. Swords can easily be used only as ornaments. True, it does require that you're sane and level-headed, and NOT a knucklehead (I take it that's the same as a 'chuckle head') who would try to increase his virilty by making potent swings with this thing in his appartment.
- And to be honest, I am of the opinion that the human race is in dire need of continued evolution. For this to occur the unfit must somehow be killed off. I only pray that people who would make these potent swings with ornamental swords will do so BEFORE they have managed to procreate.
A radical (see below) opinion some might say.

Liberals...

OK, who says I'm a liberal. There are conservatives in this world who strongly disagree with Bush's foreign (and domestic) policies.
But it certainly is off-topic, and was not meant as much as a political jab, as an attempt at comical relief. I see the humor was lost on you :) .

I will conclude with a final smilie: :) to underline the humerous side of my posts above ... ;)

Yes, Humor is often lost on me, I dont find many things funny at all. If I win you still get the sword Sikker, because in all candeor I find you the least amusing poster in this thread.

You definately deserve a prize.

I stand corrected. Fortunately I have been blessed with that rare trait of being able to admit when I am wrong. ;)

I have heard of this place before and have seen one of thier swords (it was a Katana). It certainly had good balance and proper weight distribution. Definately an affordable alternative to a forge. I should have probably said initially that if one wanted hierloom quality blades you should go to a forge.

There are several decent affordable places out there that can get you a contact ready blade for 200.00.

You kinda have to agree with that. I mean, I know feeding trolls is generally frowned upon, but feeding a sword to a troll doesn't really sound like a too bad idea.

Too bad paradox went with the Cursader line, instead of the Trollslayer line. ;)

Now, lets let this thread die.

You don't even have to pay that much more than that to get yourself something that could be descirbed as an excellent blade. Most of the highly regarded armories (Albion Armorers, Angus Trim, Arms&Armor, etc...) generally sell their works for around 400$-700$. A scrabbard would add around 50-300 bucks to that, depending on how fancy you choose to go..

I'm speaking mainly about European style blades here, of course. Don't know much when it comes to proper nihon-to.
