Hi all

Who of you HoI1 & HoI2 veterans (like me) will still build BB's in HoI3. Afterall we all have experienced many times how inferior they are against a carrier strike group. The only reason I build them as Germany was as a prestige project VII Bismarck & VII Tirpitz...

Tons. This silly idea that ships that carry around aircraft will be decisive in naval warfare is preposterous, and it's supporters should be dismissed immediately. True naval warfare is decided by battleships, and will be so forever!

Playing as Italy I will probably build them... as the Japanise and Germans maybe I'll build 1-2 for flavour but concentrate on subs (germany) and carriers (as japan)

I will always build BB's if I am playing a major naval power, the number depends on my IC. As Japan I never laid down the Yamatos until I had conquered China and I will expect to do the same in HOI3. As Germany I usually build historical BCs and BB's, then more once USSR is finished off. I am eager to see the build/design features for new ships. Nations like Japan and Italy nearly rebuilt their older BB's, their depiction in HOI2 was not very accurate.

I personally think I will use the Yamato as a long range merchant raider for the Indian Ocean and Suez canal, but I will keep the carriers close to the Americans.

Then again I hope I just didn't give away my multiplayer strategy.

Yeah.... BB's are kewl! great way to wait a few IC's for a longish amount of time.

But if we have battalions to install on out naval wessels (I just love saying "wessels", and that's not a dig on Slavic speakers either. i really like any "eastern European/Russian woman's accent.) in HOI3 like we can in HOI2 DD armi, then BB's will be really kewl and more accurate like the real time upgrades that at least the US did with regard to AA upgrades to their BB's in WW2.

If you read the manual for HOI3, the only additions to older ships are AA, Radar and ASW.

In HoI2 I always included a number of BBs, especially once I had researched the supers.

If my fleet was 9/9 (9 cap ships, 9 escorts) to max out what an admiral can command, I usually had 5 CAGs and 4 BBs.

If I was doing the 30 ship fleet, there were still usually 5 BBs in that fleet.

Cause if they got in firing range, the super BBs had a HELLUVA lot better attack than a CAG of comparable capability.

I guess I considered them my fire brigade if the enemy got too close to be just an over the horizon battle between CAGs.

I think one should obviously build battleships; especially if you're a nation with limited naval power, like Germany. Sure, you won't stand much of a chance against a combined fleet action from the British and their carriers, but you can rule the Baltic and engage some smaller formations (cruiser strength) of the British in the North Sea. It might force them to bring out a carrier strike force, which could be good hunting for submarines.

I would hope once the A.I. sees a German battleship sink anything in the Atlantic it would send everything but the farm against it. Because that's exactly what happened in real life.

BBs might not be too bad an idea actually. A limited number can be very useful for carrier protection and supporting amphibious landings, especially in HoI3. Historically, the BBs were used as large AA platforms for carrier task forces with the additional punch against ground forces/installations. Since capital ships can now be upgraded, the ever increasing AA, radar, and ASW values might just give them a new lease.

Maybe.

Well don't your ships now position independantly of one another?
I thnk when playing as a Major nation I will be going with CTFs with a few BBs as body guards. Hopefully they will get a few opertunities to pour on some hurt.

Just give it relativly small guns, good engines, good armor and a hell of a lot of AA guns and you have and excellent carreir escort.
EDIT: Double emu'd.
