Hmm? We both began research on the Turbojet in the same month. I'm not sure what the date on his was, or on mine, but we both started developing the practical turbojet engine simultaneously, using the same tech team too. :)

My dear Benito? How does it go with you, for I am truly wonderful! This month has been nothing but a great success for Rome, and I personally cannot wait to glo—err—tell you all about it!

On the 4th of this great month, the pocket in eastern Africa was finally eradicated as the French and their allies were driven into the single town of Mogadishu and then attacked from all sides! In the great battle, some twelve—later fifteen—Italian divisions took part against eleven French and other divisions. Nine of these divisions were destroyed, two American divisions only escaped due to the presence of friendly transports off shore. Nevertheless, a great victory against the weakening forces arrayed against me!

battleformogadishu.jpg

The great victory of Mogadishu!

Two days later, another fine victory was attained—this time in Britannia! Di Bennati and Clerici attacked the American beachhead at Liverpool and crushed the three American divisions stationed there. Later, another American division landed and was eradicated. Save for those recalcitrant Americans up in Caledonia, Britannia is completely safe once again!

battleforliverpool.jpg

The crushing of the American beachhead at Liverpool.

Action came quickly again as, on the 9th, Messe arrived in Karachi! He was, however, immediately beset from all sides as the British attacked not only with relieving forces from Hyderabad but their units retreating from Birjand attacked as well. However, between tireless interdiction strikes by my tactical bombers and Vercellino’s attack on Birjand, Messe stood his ground, Karachi remained in Roman hands and the British fled from Birjand northward into Mashhad!

massivebattlesineasternpersia.jpg

The penultimate of the great battles in Persia.

On the 10th, my great naval bombers discovered a tiny American fleet between Hibernia and Britannia. Why is this important, I hear you ask? Well, that fleet consisted of two destroyers and a carrier! All three ships were sunk, and that is one less carrier to bother my glorious naval forces!

anamericancarrier.jpg

An American carrier, which was quickly sent to its doom.

Now I must, unfortunately, pass on the single piece of bad news that came to me this month. The Americans attacked southwards from Caledonia toward Glasgow and managed to overwhelm my defenses with their greater numbers. However, my Italians managed to halt their thrust at Edinburgh! If the Americans want to attack south, they shall attack on my terms, and when this happens they shall be destroyed!

defeatinglasgow.jpg

Defeat at Glasgow.

The next great victory occurred on the 21st, as Birjand was finally conquered by my great Italians for the last time and the attack on Mashhad began! A total of twenty-seven British and puppet divisions were eradicated in this great battle! The forces of the British imperialists have weakened immensely—my spies tell me that this was more than a third of the remnants of their army.

crushingmashhad.jpg

The beginning of the great cauldron-battle of Mashhad.

Now I must tell of my great naval bombers yet again. On the 23rd and occasionally for the rest of the month, British battleships and heavy cruisers were sighted. Due to the efficiency of my bomber crews, two British battleships and at least three British heavy cruisers shall not stand against my fleet any longer!

britishbattleships.jpg

British battleships!

On the 29th, however, the British managed to surprise me, I am ashamed to say. They attacked Karachi en masse, throwing twelve divisions against the six I had stationed there and obviously had other reserves in the area as well. It was only through Messe’s skill with his hard-hitting armor and my tactical bombers that the British were halted, but halted they were! Soon, Karachi shall be garrisoned with a full twelve divisions to guard it against further attacks as my focus shall soon switch to the Soviet Union!

surprisingamountofbritishunitsleft.jpg

The British have a surprisingly large amount of divisions left in India.

Thus, this has been my month. Absolutely glorious, it has been! I cannot stress this enough, this glory that is covering Rome! Glory to Italy!

Glory indeed! No man alive can say words enough to explain the sheer magnitude of the glory we experience today, for I too have an endless supply of excellent news. For one, the first stage of my next large operation has commenced, and is going very very smoothly. Now, let my glo- er… explaining, commence!

Until about the 14th of March, nothing of significance happened. I had been moving troops around to more appropriate locations since the final battle for Villa Cisneros. The first news to be reported is little short of great, however. SIAI-Marchetti finished their research into an improved tactical bomber. I am much more than satisfied. However, we have but three tactical bomber squadrons, and over 80 infantry divisions. My next move was contacting Breda, their task being the further improvement of our small arms and infantry tactics. I also used this day to mark the beginning of operation Anti-stupid-island-that-should-be-our-outpost-anyway. Twelve transport ships had left Bermuda harbor under the watchful eye of Admiral da Zara. Three days later, already near their destination, I declared WAR on Cuba.

Italy-44-4-1.png

The first victories were great, as da Zara easily dismissed what was probably half of the entire Cuban navy. Pathetic fools they were to try and intercept my transports, which had by then already begun an amphibious landing. Unfortunately, Cuba is garrisoned by two divisions on each of her provinces, and 6 in Havana, the capitol. Italy has no trained marine infantry, so I had to use our best and brightest leaders to try and eat through the blockade.

Italy-44-4-2.png

The first battle ended in defeat. Despite da Zara’s heavy shore bombardment and Cuba’s mostly obsolete troops (I notice now that my own troops were obsolete as well. It seems not all divisions have finished upgrading to the newest grade infantry) we were unable to break the defense, though that wasn’t the point anyway. When the enemy was weakened and tired from a full day of combat, we withdrew, and a second set of infantry commenced their assault.

Italy-44-4-3.png

We won this battle as easily as we swam across the Atlantic in our massive carriers. Scaterred, the enemy fled for their lives as the remaining two transports also began unloaiding their cargo onto the beaches of Camaguey. They would have to return to Bermuda without incident, but I trust our naval bombers will provide the cover they need. Regardless, soon after establishing the beachhead, and awaiting reinforcements from the shore, the first troops were already well on their way to storm Guantanamo Bay.

Italy-44-4-4.png

They were as victorious as could be. Unfortunately, Guantanamo is a mountain province, and they will only secure it on the 13th of May. That gives the rest of the forces two weeks to clean up the rest of the island. I trust they will manage.

Among other news, Macchi also finished research into an aircraft upgrade: the so called advanced naval bomber, only one step removed from harboring the fabled turbojet engine Arturo Crocco is hard at work on. I ordered FIAT to develop our field artillery slightly. It’s hard to say why I found this necessary, but surely it won’t strain their production queues. Glory to Italy, Benito! We are ever victorious!

My good Benito, I’m afraid I don’t have too much to report, but even so, I bask in glory, for a vital landmark has been reached in our collective, yet separate struggle for world domination. Behold the swiftness at which I conquered Cuba!

Italy-44-5-1.png

This was the only significant battle. My troops, still fresh out of Africa and not too well organized made minced meat from that grave annoyance we call enemy soldiers. And good meat it was. I had a few bites myself. Terrible in taste, as one should expect from an enemy, and yet so satisfying on a mental level…

Italy-44-5-2.png

Soon after reaching the province on the 6th, they moved on to Havana. The victory was easy to say the least. We held the capitol city hours before Guantanamo was secured in our hands. It wasn’t until the 13th that Cuba had finally been annexed. Glory to Italy! This is, unfortunately, the last news of great interest. On the 15th da Zara sunk another US carrier on escort duty as I was running transport operations from Africa to Bermuda to Cuba. The trans-Atlantic voyage left many soldiers exhausted, but at this very moment 90% of our assault army stands on Cuban soil, with 9 more divisions (including an HQ) due to arrive in a couple of days.

Italy-44-5-3.png

Isn’t it magnificent?! The Italian population on Cuban soil now outnumbers that of Cubans themselves! This will complete our assault preparation, but the plans for that, which you surely already expect, I will not reveal until a later date. The transports have been ordered to rebase in Havana, as da Zara already had. I see only one possible setback that did not come to my attention before our rightful occupation of the island: there are no airbases on it! No matter, if my plan works, we won’t need even the slightest mention of an airbase. Meanwhile, enjoy the view of green in the Caribbean. Glory to Italy!

Truly a great month for you Benito, as Cuba shall surely be only the first step! I too have little to mention, as the great culminating months of many processes was March. April, I fear, many such processes have only started again and shall culminate in such a dramatic fashion again only in many months time. Our lives cannot always be poised on the edge of danger.

On the first of the month, the Americans assaulted Edinburgh again. As at Glasgow, they had a great superiority in numbers and thus managed to throw my brave Italians back away from the city. I ordered them to withdraw toward Blackpool, leaving Sunderland undefended. Either they shall take the bait and exploit southward, leaving me there to cut them off and destroy them or they shall not. In the first case, they shall be destroyed, in the second I am cleverly defending my frontlines in Britain by the very fact that I do not have a frontline across half the island. As you can tell, this is purely my genius at work. As it is, they have occupied Sunderland but have gone no farther, those spineless cowards!

defeatatedinburgh.jpg

Unfortunately, my garrison in Edinburgh was defeated by a great gaggle of Americans.

Next I must comment on some strange occurrence that has, well, occurred on the German eastern front. Two strange occurrences, actually and both should be self-evident on the image I will present.

problemsintheeast.jpg

The aforementioned image I am presenting.

As you can see, there are problems in the east, grave problems! Not only have the Soviets overrun East Prussia but they are in danger of encircling many German divisions still in eastern Poland! Secondly, look at Warsaw. It is not only hostile, but is in British hands! How in the hallowed names of all the ancient-and-hopefully-soon-to-be-resurrected Roman Gods did they even get there, much less conquer something?! I suspect, Benito, that the Soviets and the British are in league against us!

The last event of any note occurred on the 22nd, as the Americans assaulted Belfast yet again. This time, however, my naval bombers attacked the American transports as they attempted to disgorge their troops on the beaches of northern Hibernia! As you can plainly predict, my good Benito, not only was Morigi successful in repulsing the American attack, but all three American divisions actually drowned! Truly, that was a great day for Italy!

battleofbelfast.jpg

Finally, I must mention two great technological breakthroughs. On the 22nd, Arturo Crocco presented me with his very first practical turbojet engine and it worked perfectly! I immediately contracted Macchi to develop a turbojet naval bomber, as we are in dire need of such an upgrade! The very next day, the 23rd if you hadn’t been paying attention, Breda came to me with their plans for a semi-modern infantry division! I was so excited, I admit that I giggled like a giddy school girl, Benito! Do you understand what this means? My infantry shall be semi-modern first in the entire world! I then hired Pietro Badaglio to develop a modern hospital system. I don’t think I need to remind you of that grenade incident in the Great War. I can only conclude that Italy shall prosper! Glory to Italy!

Wow, this is first time ever (except 1944.scenario) I have seen AI launching at least formidable amphibious assault. And how these crazy Brits got to Warsaw, maybe it's because of that Warsaw uprising ? Anyway strange to see so weak Germany.
And I can confess that I have never fought on a American soil, however isn't 33 div. too less ? I am not an expert, just asking :p .
P.S. keep up the good work.

Yes. I will attack with 42 divs. There are nine (including HQ) on route. My spies report the Americans have over 80 divisions including lots of armor. It'll be fun, but I have a plan. :)

yes, many of us are quiet readAARs, I just caught up to present posts a few days ago

EDIT: discomb, are you going to start in the carib. sea or go for a gulfum nostrum ?

Perhaps going total war style, hit and run attacks on major IC centers to cripple the US economy (crippling the US economy might not be possible, it'd likely be more along the lines of a slight sprain, but anything to cut down on 300+IC is worth it)

For an Italian invasion of the United States, I would use Cuba as a springboard to launch a diverting attack in the Southeast. Then I would sneak through the Panama Canal (after taking it of course) then launch a surprise attack in the Los Angeles/San Diego area. Cripple some of the United States' most productive regions in an early blow.

Is California a rich resource/IC area in HoI2? I've already forgotten...

Man catching up to this AAR has been GREAT! The Battle of Wadi Haifa was quite interesting, seeing as how there were more divisions involved in that stretch of desert than entire sectors of the Eastern Front! Of course it only seems natural from the way that you guys have been playing, shifting large amounts of Italians in a great mass to whichever part of the world you want to spread the Italianness in, whether it be Morocco or Persia or Cuba.

It's also REALLY made me want to play HOI2 again, and affirmed my belief that Italy is the most fun major power to play.

ColossusCrusher: nice :D

dph948: I think discomb is gonna go straight for the jugular and attack the USA ;)

chefportnen: I dunnoa anything about California, but I'm sure that discomb'll probably get to it sometime :p

anonymous4401: thanks! Italy is indeed a fun country to play. also, Italians are meant to be shifted, as it is only their great martial abilities that prevent the world from collapsing under the awful dictatorship of the democratic soviet irish proletariat living in new york

chefportnen: well, to be fair, Ethiopia doesn't begin as a major ;)

anyway, some news. discomb will be away for a bit from the 23rd on, so we'll probably post later today and then that'll be it for four or five days, until he gets back from Hainan island!

Sorry guys, updates will be sporadic until next week. We've already missed one due to excessive amounts of work that I need to do, and from wednesday to sunday I'm going to Hainan, soooooooo, no update until monday it seems, but we may do one tonight. I will answer your questions (vaguely) regarding my invasion plan though, just to be a tease.

Where will I be landing?: I considered the various points of the USA, but came to the conclusion that they are all too well guarded. Not that many divisions preventing my landing, but rather, excellent infrastructure that will pull other troops around the country to wherever I am quickly. Also, the americans have an unholy amount of airplanes. Fortunately, since da Zara has firmly anihilated their navy, they are in a panic naval build (though they still have three carriers... somewhere...) and crippling their IC will not result in much of an advantage, as their army size should remain at around a constant 80-90 divisions, provided I won't encircle any (and that's NOT a guarantee ;)). My solution to the landing is overall much better I think. Not only did I pull the armor in first to take care of it without all those annoying infantrymen, I secured an escape route along a coast, that should be very easy to evacuate without incident should things go REALLY badly. Where that is, I will leave you to wonder until tonight, but will leave one clue: it's not Alaska.

What is my overall strategy?: Seeing as my humble 130IC will never match up to the americans and their seemingly endless... well... IC, so winning by attrition will be as difficult as breaking a brick wall with one's forehead. My plan is to use relative mobility to encircle as much as I can as quickly as I can, while staying near the coastal areas to be able to use my transports for additional mobility. Keep in mind, 80% of my troops are equipped with engeneer brigades. I can force the enemy into river chokepoints while ignoring them in my own attack. Unfotunately, my troops are all infantry, bar one HQ. Still, I will run circles around them trying to crush them faster than they build up, like a meatgrinder. If the resistance becomes too stiff, I'll have to withdraw and land elsewhere, performing the same as they redeploy into my clutches. We'll see how it goes.

I hope this answers your questions in the vaguest and most unhelpful wy possible. Update tonight! I hope...
