THE AAR BEGINS:

bavaria1.jpg

This is the Duchy of Bavaria. It is now a small country tucked in the middle of a Midieval looney bin. I find it surrounded by a bunch of inbred dynasties all trying to out inbreed the others. The year 1419 is when I, sir Player take control of this homeland of the Wittelsbachs and lead it to greatness. Failing that I hope to make an interesting AAR of my failure.

Ernestbav.jpg

This is the Good Duke Ernst of Bavaria, he has good attributes for a duke to have, wise, brave, and charming. I don’t really know if I, mr. deus machina, control him directly or he just takes advice. But given my foresight I would tell him: TRY NOT TO HAVE SUCH LOOSERS FOR SONS!

bavaria2.jpg

Here is a look at my current slider positions. I think they are pretty crappy right now. My plan is basically to create the best economy that I can. So full Plutocracy, Full Centralization, Full Innovative, Don’t care about trade policy, Full Free Subjects. I also like Offensive and Quality. With Land versus Sea my ideal Bavaria at the end of the game does have a place in the sun, so a bit of a navy would be nice. New Munchen sounds like my kind of town.

As the days go by in the quiet Duchy of Bavaria, there is news from France. Mad king Charles VI has asked for military access, he really is very crazy. Look at his hat, only a crazy person would wear a hat like that.

Charles_the_Mad.jpg

Another Random Event that I always like occurs for Bavaria. I would usually go straight for the cash, but being so early in the game and having so much money to start out with. Duke Ernst decides to build Munchen for the long term, after all 1821 is a long way off.

bavaria3.jpg

Bavaria begins itself begins in a sort of dynastic alliance with Luxembourg and The Palatinate. We are one big happy family and I am content with it. Until one day, without realizing it, I am at war with Friesland. Being the amazing Player that I am. I rally the people of Bavaria to a fevered pitch of hatred for all things Friesish. Besides that I consider raising war taxes, just for the hell of it. Then I am distracted by the total lack of action and go back counting Bavarian milk maids. Also a key player in Imperial politics the Palatinate has left our alliance. Oh well.

The days rolled on until I soon found out just how dangerous palace life could be. Some say Count Karl slipped and fell, but many within the duchy believe he was assassinated. Duke Ernst tries to hush things up but as soon as his funeral is over his supporters go crazy trashing downtown Munchen. The army is called in and manage to put down the revolution.
Soon I am once again bored and decide to up the financial power of Bavaria and decide to pay my troops much less. They are excessive it seems for my duchy to have such army. I really did feel like this was the best idea at the time. How wrong I was.

COURT INTRIGUE:

The duchy is rocked by the arrest of Count Randomeriechegatz. Duke Ernst uses his power as land giver to strip the treashorous count of his territory and has him assassinated. But When the army goes to end this Count’s rule they are all surprised and slaughtered. The Duchy of Bavaria is now at the hands of the mob! All Ernst wanted was to build a Fine Arts Acadamy! I really should have payed my troops more so that they did not give up so easily against the rebels.

bavaria4.jpg

Story wise Ernst ought to be dead by any way of looking at it. I mean he was the leader of the 8,000 troops that were suddenly devastated by the rebels. Historically this would lead to enough changes that Bavaria would never be the same.

Of course the outcome of this collapse is unclear. It seems that the duchy has become much more plutocratic. This is ok by me and as regent/vizir/omnipotent dude feel with such a small nation the more production and trade the better. To my surprise the leader traits have all gone down to two each which sucks.

In his decrepit state Ernst still continues to inherit the province of Ansbach. So with this small acquisition Bavaria is on its way.

bavaria5.jpg

The alliance with Luxembourg is gone. I say screw familial ties, Bavaria needs to stop acting like a family man and more like the tough guy that beats people up. But like that tough guy I am not going to go asking for friends, they will have to come to me. So I decide to wait around.
Another explanation for this is I have no strategy or long term goals so I will do whatever EU2 wants me to do. Before I know it the mega alliance to the south is begging me to join up with them.

bavaria6.jpg

The event file roles on, and soon I am given a choice of who should the duke’s son marry. The boy apparently wants to marry Agnes Bernauer. Well marry her dammit, innovative and less serfdom. More tech! More Production! Forward the Duchy!

I suppose the best way of putting it is that the merchants of Munich realised they had an opportunity, revolted, and put into place a fledgeling constitutional monarchy. I guess Ernst managed to find some way to play along and keep his position as a basically powerless figurehead?

Bavaria's certainly looking quite ahead of its time. :D

BAVARIA ENDS ITS ISOLATIONISM

Along with much beer, conflict is brewing in Bavaria. My decision making breaks down like this: Half of me feels all of Ingolstadt or whatever ought to belong to Ernst or zombie-ernst or whoever is in charge; in other words ALL OUGHT TO BE BLUE. The other half of me reads the description and popup of what happens to Bavaria “Temporary eclipse as an imperial power” not to mention I want to be a centralized, economically powerful state. So in the end I say give peace a chance.

bavaria8.jpg

All of a sudden Bavaria finds its self at war. Not with the other Wittelsbachs but rather hooked by the alliance system. Despite having big internal problems the very sick (as sick as a Norwegian blue) Ernst decides foreign adventure is a good thing. So of we go. The Bavarian army is called to Italy, to defend its honor. Yes, I didn’t forget about maintenance!

bavaria9.jpg

The CITY of PARMA WILL BE MINE!!!

Oh yeah also and Ernst is really dead this time. So here comes a better Duke, Albert (same stupid advisor). Albert begins his reign optimistically with the minting of coins for the construction of a great arts academy. Albert has much better style and views himself as an Renaissance man not a corpse like Ernst.

The peace signed to end the Italian war did end with the legal capture and annexation of Parma to Albert III. The Bavarians introduced proper beer to the Italians and a revolt ensued.

bavaria10.jpg

Peace reigns once again and a flurry of marriage proposals go around the alliance. It seems like Bavaria is more involved in the Italian sphere as the previous alliance head has now been made a vassal of Austria. Venice is the current head I think. The Bourgeoisie are given privledges and Bavaria is on its way to success.

The happy news of receiving the Bohemian Crown is received most graciously by Albert. Who unlike real life accepts it with relish. Bavaria will be great again. As long as the economy runs and more land is added to its dominion Bavaria will fight with the best of them.

A New Kingdom Based on an Old Duchy

This update is short based on my notes, so here is some fluffy filler to fortify my tale.

Albert: Advisor, you have guided this country from the date 1419 January 1st until now you must tell me what is the master plan for Bavaria?

Me: Um well you see Bavaria is a complex country now spanning two distinct culture groups so it is impossible to tell exactly what I ought to plan.

Albert: I have sources that claim that you have directed Bavarian politics and policies towards the creation of some kind of mercantile state! Including, some whisper, the coup against my father!

Me: Look your Majesty, there are many that seek to create instability within the duchy now kingdom. I assure you the coup was as much an accident as my alliance with Tyrol and our subsequent war with Milan. To put it bluntly I have only the vaguest idea of how to direct Bavaria.

Albert: If you are not the true power behind the throne, then who is?

Me: Though I appear to be a never aging omnipotentally powerful Advisor infact there is an even greater power than I.

*pause for dramatic effect*

Me: It is the great AGCEEP. It is a mysterious beast that lies between us and the elder gods: Paradoxically both master and slave of my command!

*curtain closes*

1442 brought one of the good random events. Merchants upset! So I seize their assets and 50 ducats are brought to my treasury. Soon I think I will start trading, but I still need trade 3, I think.

What sordid affair diplomacy is. Milan which was totally annexed by Naples was shortly there after lost to Switzerland. Now Albert has great respect for Swiss industry and their production capability. But when Bavarian ally Strasbourg goes to war Albert would be very content with taking the pride of North Italy:

bavaria12.jpg

After the Swiss war Albert’s Alliance:
Titles: Duke of Bavaria, King of Bohemia, titular Duke of Milan and Parma, Protector of Bern, and Lord of Florence

THE SECOND HALF OF THE REIGN OF ALBERT

So to catch you up on what has happened. More murders in Lombardia and rebellions, Sale of offices, and I seized power from the merchant princes. Followed by slider moves and some other things. The Domain of the Wittelsbachs has become quite different. The Renaissance is at high tide in Bavaria as artists from all over Italy and Germany meet at the "Der Werkstatt." I have continued the economic stance of No Trade. I have not sent merchants at all. I am and have always been afraid of the EU2 trading mechanism. It seems to slowly eat away at money, and I don't have the micromanaging skills to send them personally.

For what ever reason Bohemia is in a war with Denmark and I am called into it. Whatever man that’s cool, is my response. The Pope has grown huge all across my border by diploannexing Modena he now encircle me all over Italy. The Pope also is hoping to prove Stalin wrong by having a huge standing army while I reduce my forces for peace time activities.

I had assumed that this war with the Viking states would be absolute dead lock. No real conflict at all. I have as allies the two largest fleets in the Mediterranean so why should I even bother. However those brave Vikings seem like they're trying to slip by the two giant fleets. ONE SHIP AT A TIME.

UPDATE NUMBER SIX

bavaria16-1.jpg

Johann IV reigns over Bavaria the first of a series of really horrible dukes. It obvious to most Bavarians that power shouldn't be held just by whatever aristocratic toff happens to occupy a throne. Still Bavaria and its advisor must suffer these fools.

I have shockingly found the answer to my previous mystery. How did the Norwegians come to menace my shores with their one ship? It turns out that for whatever reason Genoa has left my alliance for none other than the pope. Who has also vassalized Siena, as part of plan to rule all of Italy. I tell ya, them popes be fiends in other clothing.

Luckily the pope’s dominion over Zurich is being challenged by local revolutionaries. Tonight Duke Albert has asked for all the people of Bavaria to pray for the success of the rebels. In other news here are my sliders:

bavaria15.jpg

I guess Bavaria is becoming more and more Plutocratic. Innovativeness has been my first priority so I will soon be there at full.
Also new crappy duke Sigmund. I think the rightful domination of Florence is getting farther and farther away.

Gotta agree with the others - nice AAR you have going here. Bavaria is well on its way to become a great power. My only concern is that the involvment in Italy will make wine the favourite beverage in Bavaria, instead of beer. :p

I'd hardly complain, especially if this Bavaria ends up expanding over to the Rhine and grows some good Riesling. :D

Thanks for all the replies guys. I am going to keep this AAR going but I am pretty busy with work right about now. The pace of updates might slow.

On the possibilities of favorite drinks in Bavaria, Riesling would be nice. However the current rulers of the rhine aren't likely to go away. Burgundy is currently huge and even after the french estates are lost whoever inherits is going to likely stay around.

Italian wine is going to stay very important. I hope though that as much importing of italian wine the italians import Bavarian Beer.

Ideally the favorite drink of Bavarians will be RUM. I've really started plotting on how to get colonies for Bavaria. If anyone has any ideas about this let me know.

Maybe if Portugal do not have any powerfull alies and have small army you can DoW them and take their capital. And if you control their capital you have all their maps. And then you can colonize.
