Got a similar problem: I have linked my Steam account and my forums account, but I preordered on GOG... so no shiny preorder avatar for me.
Crap! I knew it was about 4 days away, but it didn't hit me that it's 4 days away until this post!

Check your GOG account? Maybe it's there already? (Not sure, I haven't used it for any Paradox games.) If not, then yeah, you'll have to wait a while, but a code should show up there sometime so you can verify your purchase to Paradox (and thus get BattleTech avatars.)

Paging @Havamal for appropriate screenshots, since he's already had to do this before.
Use the edit account button on the top right, go to settings, and connect your steam account. Eventually, the forum software in the background will look at your steam games and update your badges appropriately. This is not done automatically (with regards to connecting your PDX account to your Steam account) for privacy reasons. Note that by allowing PDX to connect to your steam account you give them xyz information that is explained in some EULA so you're not surprised by anything else that they might pull from your steam account (even if it is benignly related to forum features).
Note that if you were a kickstarter backer, you should have a separate forum code to insert to basically manually add the badge without having to go through the steam account. This is applied in the redeem section in the same account page.

I upgraded to GB internet yesterday...
Ghost Bear internet? So . . . it works real hard, until it runs into vikings and stops cold?
I pre-ordered through GMG and speaking from previous experience I'll be lucky if I get my key on the 24th, let alone on the 23rd in time to pre-load it. But lucky for them getting the game on time isn't why I order through them, it's because they tend to be cheaper than anywhere else

I'm...not sure it's not possible. I vaguely recall that they did a preload for the Witcher 3, a bit back (aaand yeah. Google confirms). That said, I've heard nothing about a preload, so... I'm guessing I'll drive back home on my lunch break and kick things off. The rest of Tuesday will be torment.
