Mitch just confirmed on the Thursday BATTLETECH Paradox Stream that Backer Keys will go out over the weekend and Steam pre-loading of the game can begin Monday for both Backers and Pre-Orders.

Do you know if the pre-download for backers only or will it be for pre-orders too? (i'm happy for you guys either way, you got the game made. I didn't even know about it until about a month ago)

Pre-downoads for Pre-orders are also lined up for Monday download too. Mitch JUST NOW confirmed that on the Paradox BATTLETECH Livestream. : )
Yes, the latest information from Mitch is that this Monday pre-downloading will be for Steam.
Preload will be be available on Steam for pre-orders and all Backers!

For @Thile, when you register the game on your PDX account (notice all the badges that us users have), the avatar selection will appropriately expand. Note that registration of all the games on your account may take a while, because this is basically a background task on the forum software (that is to say, come back the next day and you might see the badges show up, which at that point you can select the avatars).
