Just got the latest 1.8 version + Heavy Metal, so I started a new campaign. Totally vanilla, no mods. After 3-4 missions I noticed that some pilots were not receiving the XP they were supposed to receive. It _seems_ like it is always happening to the pilot in slot 3 (third from the left). I had my commander in that slot and after 2 consecutive missions, I noticed he still hadn't earned any XP after the first mission (which went fine). So I swapped another pilot into that slot to see if it was specific to my commander, and that pilot then didn't get any XP from the next mission. I don't know if the slot is a coincidence, or if it might happen to any arbitrary pilot.
One complication, I did switch computers after the first mission (using steam cloud saves to play on a different machine).

Steps to reproduce the issue
Play multiple missions (I've only done 1/2 skull so far), earning 500 XP each time. Leave a single pilot in the 3rd slot for multiple consecutive missions, and note that after the first mission, they stop receiving XP, despite saying that they've earned 500 for subsequent missions on the mission summary screen.
Attach DxDiag (PC), System Info log (Mac), or run sudo lshw -html > specs.html and uploaded specs.html (Linux)
