I recently reinstalled Battletech through Steam, and have not been able to get past the main menu. The intro video does not play, the background of the main menu is black, if the settings menu is opened I am unable to back out and the language and time dropboxes are blank, and attempting to play career campaign or skirmish leads to infinite loading screens.
I have done the clean uninstall as shown by Edmon, have verified game files, have tried launching via the steam play button along with BattleTech.exe and BattleTechLauncher.exe, and have added BattleTech.exe as an exception to Bitdefender antivirus. I did previously have mods installed, though not currently. All season pass DLC are installed.

The game thinks Steam is not running:
Unity [ERROR] System.InvalidOperationException: Steamworks is not initialized.

You are running the game from the Steam PLAY button, not a desktop shortcut or direct from BattleTech.exe ?

If so first run a Steam Verify operation against the game. If that finds nothing to fix, Please try a **clean** reinstall (slightly different from Edmon's one):

- Remove the game from Steam (uninstall)

- Manually delete all these files and folders, if still there:

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\BattleTech\

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\LocalLow\Harebrained Schemes\

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\USER_ID\637090\
(first move the \remote\C#\SGS#\ folder elsewhere to keep your save games)

- Install the game again

- add steam.exe and BattleTech.exe to the Whitelist of your antivirus app, whatever it is

If you still get any problem we'll probably need to do a clean Steam reinstall too.
