One line summary of your issue
Excessive heat build up regardless of settings used.

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
I am not sure what is the issue, however, I find that Battletech runs anywhere between 10C and 20C hotter than any other game in my library. It triggered automatic shutdown when my CPU went over the safe temperature limit. This happens regardless of the settings I use.

My computer specs

CPU: Intel i7-7820HK
GPU: Nvidia GTX 1080
RAM: 16 Gigabytes
OS: Windows 10

All my drivers are up to date.

I have 3 intake fans and 4 outtake fans that will run at high RPM (between 25K and 33K) during high loads. This is normally enough to mitigate game heat by a healthy margin.

Steps to reproduce the issue
Run the game.

Probably the game is running at an excessive refreshrate. You need to force Vsync in the nVidia controls.

Not the games fault.

if your hardware is overheating its your problem.

hardware is designed to run 100% wihtout issue.
A game cannot cause somthing to overheat.

Check ur hardware, ensure clean heatsink, ensure good airflow, ensure proper tIM application. Check votlages.

I assure you this game has only shown up a pre existing issue.

What are you talking about? If a game is making a 4 month old computer build up enough heat to trigger automatic shutdown, that is clearly a scenario not within the designed operating parameters. This is literally the only game I have that pushes my GPU past 60% load (It averages between 95% and 100%). It's also the only game I have that has triggered automatic shutdown with this computer.

Also, quick little update, even with V-sync enabled, the game still builds up enough heat to trigger automatic shutdown. While it's true that the v-sync reduced heat a little bit, all it really accomplishes is adding an extra 5 to 10 minutes before shutdown occurs.

At this stage, this game is unplayable. Hopefully, the fault is isolated, and a measure is created to fix it. Until then, I shall be patient.

What's the CPU % load?

Yes, the game makes your GPU work a lot, especially at 2560x1440 and up but it shouldn't stress the CPU much. As for the GPU "over heating", it never triggers a system reboot, it will clock lower and lower until it can manage the temperature but it won't make your computer reboot.

Is your GTX 1080 using a blower type cooling or does it push all the heat from the card inside your case(reference model VS custom cooling solution from the manufacturer)? If the case isn't ventilated enough, it could cause the CPU to overheat in which case it would trigger a reboot.

Can you give us the temperature for both the CPU and GPU when it's close to rebooting on its own?

Can you give us your entire system build?

PS:Yes, they're aware of the unrealistic workload the game can put on some system and are working with nVIDIA (and also AMD I would assume) to see what's the problem.

Good to hear, got a link for that?

I'm not enjoying the fact that it makes a machine that can run high stress VR titles and graphically heavy AAA titles without issues sound like a hairdryer- and still look janky. It appears to be rendering frames at a crazy runaway speed, no matter what you do to force sync, which is a bit of a show stopper. Fingers crossed that they work out what they're doing wrong.

I have an MSI laptop. So when my GPU gets really hot, it tends to make the CPU hot, as well. The price you pay for portability (my job requires me to move around the world). Last I played it pushed my CPU average temperature past 65C. Generally, after about 40 minutes at this high temperature, my PC completely freezes until it eventually shuts down. Also, I got the latest drivers from Nvidia and it hasn't fixed the problem.

Another thing that some people have noticed is that BattleTech seems to work their GPUs harder than expected.

MM: That one, also, we’re pretty confident is hardware-specific. We’re still working to triangulate a little more within that. We’ve been talking to Nvidia about it. That’s not to say they’re to blame, just that we’re investigating.

MG: We’re aligned in our goals.

MM: Again, it’s specific to some users. We’re also looking at—this next patch will push some memory usage optimization as well. Some improvements there.

OK, back.

Good thing you have a MSI, a bought a few of these in the last few years so I'm pretty familiar with them.

Usually on their gamer models, they have some kind of "cooling boost" function that you can activate just by pressing a key above the keyboard. It should make the fans spin at their maximum rpm right away. I know it's noisy but, for now at least, make sure you do that prior to launching the game and keep it on all the time.

Also, just to be sure, always play on a flat surface so the laptop has plenty of room to pull in some fresh cool air.

Next, make sure you play at 1920x1080, not higher, I see there's a 4k option, I know your card should be able to play at that resolution but don't, right now we want to keep the card from load from staying at 100% all the time.

Next, I'm going to post a link that show and explain how to use and set RivaTuner StatisticServer so you can limit your frame rate to 60 fps.

The reason why V-sync might not be helping is, well, it depends on the options you got for the laptop but the 1920x1080 display is 120Hz, so v-sync locks it at 120 fps and that's still enough to have the card load be very high in some case.

Here's the link, it's from another post I made a while back to help people with the same problem you have.

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...gpu-utilization.1091398/page-12#post-24162409

Make sure you have the RTSS visible in game and that the game is capped at 60, not higher.

One last thing, I don't know if it came with the laptop or not but on desktop, MSI has this easy to use "Gaming App" that allows you to either overclock or underclock the card with a simple click. If you have that installed, there's a mode called "silent mode". It's meant to keep the fan from spinning to keep the noise level to a minimum, but the reality of it is that it simply will underclock the card to keep it from getting too hot.

If you don't have that, you can use MSI Afterburner(link in the post linked above) to do it yourself. You could start by setting the power limit to 75% and see how it goes for you. For me, on PC with a GTX 1080, the card is 9C cooler with the fan barely spinning so I assume that with your fans set to maximum already, the delta should be even greater.

Good luck!

Did you look into this?

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU)
1/ before starting the game up and
2/ in the main game menu
3/ after say 10 minutes' play.
If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, install
SPEEDFAN http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.
