Cannot play skirmish with someone on the same router

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
Have tried for several days to play skirmish with my son. Several times the server has allowed us to login and start a match but we never get past the first round. Usually it will not even allow the second player to connect to the match that has been set up for more than 4 seconds. Both of us are running the single player mode with no problems. Our internet connection has been checked by a provider service tech and we have 500 megabit dload speed and load testing showed no problems. Why is there no LAN option for skirmish mode?

I think I have the same issue. Every time I try to create a skirmish battle with my son it gives me an error message. I've also tried to connect to another skirmish with someone else and I get the same error. any idea for a work around?

They told me it was firewall related but we even turned off all firewalls and checked the router and nothing works.
