I'm often facing the problem of the battleplanner moving my divisions to other provinces to consolidate the frontline, through enemy territory (see screenshots).
This results in 1 division attacking into hopeless fights.

Any way to prevent that, or is that a problem with the battleplanner?

In the last 2 screenshots, my divisions didn't even have an active attack order...

edit: see second page for bitmode's explanation of the bug

Seems to me like this is a problem of the path finding algorithm which computes the shortest path but does not consider possible enemy provinces on the way.

EDIT: Not necessarily the shortest path, but also a path which does not lead through provinces with active combat.

It happens when units have to travel a long way and the enemy are advancing. It sets up a route at the beginning of the redeploy and doesn't recalculate.

I've had it when trying to move units from Ethiopia to El'allamain (sp?) front as the UK. If Italy is advancing the units will strategically redeploy to where the front used to be weeks ago.

It can also happen if you add units from your training divisions in your homeland to a distant front - by the time they arrive the front has moved.

That's not the situation in my screenshots though, enemies were not advancing.

I've seen this happen as well with the battle planner.

I've also had it happen when not using the battle planner. I manually tell a division to move to another spot along the line, and they move through enemy territory to get there.

I manually tell a division to move to another spot along the line, and they move through enemy territory to get there.
Movement orders are always using the shortest path. You can chain (movement) orders by shift-click.

It's not something I've come across. Is your modlist short enough to give us here?

I'm not using any mod that would affect the battleplanner; it's an engine feature.

I've seen this happen as well with the battle planner.

I've also had it happen when not using the battle planner. I manually tell a division to move to another spot along the line, and they move through enemy territory to get there.
That's something else (cf post above by elektrizikekswerk).

I've seen this before. Its infuriating. Usually when you change orders, or front assignments, and the battle-planer decides to reshuffle divisions in the front, path-finding sometimes sends some divisions into enemy territory. I don't know if its attempting the shortest route, I only know that it does that. And if you fail to notice it quick enough, sometimes what happen is that parts of your front get unmanned as your divisions are attempting to carve a path over enemy territory to get to their assigned positions.

I have only really seen this in cases where the unit controller gives an order then a province along its path is taken by the enemy. The Unit controller does reassess orders periodically so it really isn't an issue since they will get rerouted quickly.

Having an unit attack alone without an order is a problem, especially if said attack is through a river or forts...

Still seeing this faulty behavior in 1.6.0

My mobile infantry unit in the screenshot attacks (alone, into a 7-level fort) despite having no attack order, to move to its frontline.

@bitmode any idea on this one :)?

(this is based on version 1.5.3) The path finding never looks at forts or rivers, only the movement cost of the path. There's five different modes of pathing (presumably for things like manual orders, strat redeploy, front line shuffling, attacking etc.) but none of them change the movement cost. They just have different criteria which province connections are allowed, i.e. if a mode allows moving through enemy provinces, it would do that whenever the need arises. I've never seen this bug happen myself.

I managed to reproduce it in cases like the 3rd screenshot in the OP, when the entrance into a spearhead gets blocked by a counterattack. Will update if I find anything.

Thanks; I do indeed exclusively use spearheads. Note that the divisions affected by the bug don't have any attack orders (meaning not even a non-activated order), it's surrounding units that have spearheads.
