But you did say that this was a reason why a WW1 DLC should not be made. Despite basically admitting that the Kaiserschlacht was essentially a battle of maneouvre and therefore the Western Front was not a pure stalemate, which seemed to be your main objection to a WW1 DLC.

I said that HOI can't simulate trench warfare well enough. Battles that lasted for months, and lines that didn't move for years. Don't give words to my mouth.

Don't forget, WWI wasn't only in France, there was Russia, Italy, Balkan, Caucasus, Mesopotamia, Palestine (and Galopolli). On the other front, movement did exist, more then enough

So, basically, you would want to play it, but you just don't want to pay for it. You believe its perfectly possible for a modder to make a playable WW1 mod but you don't think professional developers with access to the .exe could do a better job because of arbitrary reasons.

Again, strawman.
I clearly said that I would pay for it. Not for a DLC though, but for a completely new experience.

If there is a DLC there will need to be more and better specialised combat options to deal with the idea of trench warfare, can you really imagine trench warfare playing out well with the current Hoi4 system of combat? It would be simplistic, and not that interesting.

That said if this was done I'd love to see a WW1 mod and I do think the demand is there, it's just too overlooked.

More tactics commanders can choose (something like artillery barrage) would indeed be nescessary, but it isn't impossible

I have a feeling that a ww1 version will just be like HOI4 with less stuff. Lack of tanks and effective airforce would be a huge change for the worse in my opinion. I just feel it is going to be something with less option then HOI4 WW2 edition.

I presume a WW1 DLC from Paradox would be for a game covering the time period like a Vicky 3. As far as mods go HOI4 is a great platform for WW1 warfare, nothing will stop us from making the mod--and in reasonable time. "Static" warfare won't be that difficult to recreate/enhance, and it's ok if some players find it boring. I am even happy to play through the Interwar with limited action, because we're planning a lot of content and features that will add to the experience of managing your country. Honestly the biggest road block for WWI games.. Is WWII, it pretty much one ups everything going on in WWI. So any gameplay mechanic is almost surely more fun applied to WWII instead. One major exception to this however is the Germans having a powerful, tangible fleet, instead of being 100% outgunned like in WWII, WWI big gun ships and battles would be tons of fun, just because there would be so much more of it in going on in Europe. So even if you take away carriers, the strategic situation could really spice things up.

Vicky 3 stands by itself - V2 didn't cover WW1 in any meaningful way and there's a strong chance that (given the basic concept of the franchise, primarily the fact that it has to be able to cover the early-mid 19th century as well) V3 won't be able to either. That doesn't mean that V3 isn't interesting, but it seems unlikely to be able to scratch that WW1 itch.

Eh, I still think DLC is the wrong way to go about it.

I understand the sentiment, but if the demand for a war game on the scale of HOI for WWI exists, then Paradox shoots themselves in the foot putting out some DLC for HOI4. They should instead just get off their... ahem... and make a full fledged WWI war game in the same tradition as HOI.

I'd love for them to do this. I just don't think they will - the 100th anniversary of the end of the war will be commemorated in just over two years, so for them to release in time to cash in on the attention that WW1 is receiving right now it would have to be in the works already, and I really doubt it is given what Johan has said in the past.

This is whay I'm against a HOI4 WW1 DLC because a modder can do it as well. You talk about tweaking the defines to simulate ww1, but why should I pay for that? If PDS wants a WW1 experience they should create a new combat mechanic. WW1 was a very important part of history, and a WW2 DLC can't do justice for it.

This is probably a personal difference thing then. If someone makes something that's fun, and puts time and effort into it (and a WW1 DLC will be a lot of time and effort, just ask Dizzle3, Ostheim or the DH team) then I'd be happy to pay for it. Hell, if PDS wanted to put corvettes into HoI4 (something I'm planning to do myself), I'd still be happy to pay for it instead of having to do it myself, even though I have no doubt I'll be able to :).

Eh, I still think DLC is the wrong way to go about it.

I understand the sentiment, but if the demand for a war game on the scale of HOI for WWI exists, then Paradox shoots themselves in the foot putting out some DLC for HOI4. They should instead just get off their... ahem... and make a full fledged WWI war game in the same tradition as HOI.

I think this cuts both ways. If they released a full-fledged game, even if it has the number of person-hours put into it as a full game, there'll be people complaining it should have been HoI4 DLC. I'd probably go the Panzer Corps: Soviet Corps route and make it stand-alone DLC, at less than full game price but more than the usual DLC (assuming that's roughly an indication of how much work it took).

Also agree that it's likely to be quicker to put together a scenario with DLC and some relatively minor engine tweaks (that could also possibly benefit gameplay in HoI4's came timeframe) than a 'full' game (presumably a 'full' WW1 game would go into more depth into the imperial brinksmanship and naval arms races (Woot! :D) that took place in the lead-up to WW1 - ie, getting more into Vicky's territory), and that DLC might be better in the first instance.

However, would deffo prefer a stand alone WW1 game, were it feasible, but I think Johan is on record saying he'd never do it (although I'm not saying he couldn't change his mind).
