Battlecry achievement question

Hi, I’m trying to do the battlecry achievement, but the war with Japan has dragged the allies and even though I am the biggest participant I don’t think that I’ll be able to grab all of Japan and China for myself.

The achievement says conquer, not own, so does that mean that I can just declare on the allies after I’ve grabbed as much of Japan and China as I can and quickly conquer whichever part they grab or do I need to capitulate them (impossible as the USA is already at full strength) and get the territory in a pace deal?

I'm pretty sure that you need to take to land in a peace conference. However, you might be able to game the AI during the conference.

The democratic AI does not like taking land directly. Knowing that, there's a good chance that you can take all of the land that you need. You only need the Japanese cores (as well as those of China and Manchukou). A good few of the pacific islands are not cores, so you can let the Allies take them. Your bigger problem is that democratic AI loves to puppet. That means that you need to puppet Japan yourself, unless you can take all of their cores in the first turn. You can follow one of two approaches:
- Just directly puppet Japan and feed them their cores in the next turns. This means that you will need to annex them, but it's the safer option, as feeding them their land is cheaper than taking it yourself. Having to annex them is still better than fighting the Allies. If the Allies occupy a core before the peace conference, it won't be more expensive, if you feed it to someone who has cores on it.
- The other option is to make Japan your puppet, without any of their cores. You can select which state a new puppet will have by first selecting every single one of their states. Then de-select the state that you want them to have (in this case the cheapest non-core one that you can find). Then de-select all of the other states (you'll have to do this manually as the "Take All States" button will first undo the puppet first). Then you can take the states that you want yourself. This will be more expensive, as they are not your cores, so this makes it slightly riskier.

You also need to be careful that they don't puppet either Manchukuo or Mengukuo.

They can also puppet a resurrected Nationalist/Communist China (in Japan's former holdings on the mainland), but those are actually possible to take with the border clash mechanics.

Yes I forgot to mention them. You need to unlock border conflicts with a national focus. It's possible to change to the China focus tree without doing this, so the border conflicts may not be available.

Like others have reported, you have to own all the Chinese, Manchukuo, and Japanese cores. Just controlling them is not enough. The only exceptions are the European treaty ports (Hong Kong, Macau).

Ok! Thanks for all your answers. I guess I'll have to either ”game the AI” or start all over again because the allies are utterly strong and the Comintern (who won the IIWW) hates my guts.

I don't know if it's possible to roll back to the specific game version needed anymore, but battlecry used to be bugged so you would get it instantly on game start.

I think it is possible to do that - to use observer mode - in 1.5.4, as I'm certain that bug was not fixed until somewhere in MtG. I did that one myself not too long ago and was just about ready to give up due to the grinding when Japan suddenly caved and the Allies were still nowhere to be seen in the Pacific. So I go t it all. THrough it all I kept tellig myself I could just cheese it, but my pride was against it.

I'd suggest puppeting Japan, then annexing them by lowering autonomy. This is what I did when I got the achievement.

Once you puppet Japan, the Democratic AI is very unlikely to take Japanese land. (make sure your puppet possesses the Japanese Mariana islands if they still have cores there)

Also, the Soviet never take or puppet any land in China, so joining the Comintern is an option. Just be sure to puppet Japan so the Soviet don't do it.

The real achievement here is gaming the peace conference system... it’s actually more difficult than winning the war.

Quite. There have been games when I deliberately didn't join a faction, just to give everyone else that x10 cost on the territory I take. There is no word I hate more in these achievements than "own".

Same. In my current game as Greece the Soviets DOWed me after I took Romania. After that I left the Axis to make sure that the Germans would mess things up and take my land when they declared (no achievement, but my land is mine).

I finally did it!

After a couple more attempts I finally did it. I started the war with Japan way earlier (so they didn’t have that much troops and the allies didn’t have too much participation), I didn’t join the allies (I didn’t know that that made provinces cheaper for them), and I “gamed” the peace conference and I puppeted Japan and I took all of Manchuria and Mengukuo in the first turn. They puppeted China but thanks to border clashes I could take it back.

So long story short: don’t join the allies, start the war with Japan earlier and “game” the game in the peace conference.
