Strange thing happened:

In war against Netherlands with Lithuania.

Im on land 17, they on land 18. My monarch on 4, theres on 3 in terms of military. Im on 100 % military and meet them with 12.000 cavalry in planes. They have 2,000 infantry, and 1,000 cavarly ... My morale drops quickly, and Im almost about to lose the battle - then my allies France call peace ...

How could this battle go this way? My serfdom - free subjects slider is in the middle of both ...

1) They had a CRT advantage.

2) Your army doesn't have any guns, which means your morale would have got pummelled in the fire phase.

3) You were just unlucky - it's only one battle.

CRT advantage means what?

I just read elsewhere about those cavalry only units crash everything and everyone in plains ;)

Right it was only one battle - and next war might not happen ;) against this opponent ...

Like the Charge of the Light Brigade ? ;)

Maybe they had better sliders (land, offensive, quality). Or they might have an historic leader. Besides, don't the reformed countries get a morale boost too ?

EDIT : CRT means Combat Result Table, I think. It the result of your troops in battle. So, since land 18 gives a new table for them, they had the advantage.
And from my (limited) experience, I definitely prefer to be on the better side of the tech advantage.

Thanks my friend :) Well with Lithuania I was never ever on the better side on land tech so far ... But soon we will finally crush Crimea, or maybe the Ottos ... they are level now ... and if I get really mean we take on some Indians in Canada ;)

It's always wise before you start a war to check the land tech levels of your enemy and make sure they don't have a CRT advantage on you. If they do, then they automatically have a huge advantage and will win almost any battle, even if they're only one level ahead. CRTs get upgraded at the following land tech levels (the naval levels are different): 9, 14, 18, 26, 35, and 51.

Also, cavalry isn't as advantageous as you get into higher tech levels. It's certainly still good to have a large cavalry contingent on plains regardless of where you are in the game, but after you reach land 5 or so, infantry start becoming more and more important in every situation.

More correctly, the opponent was at an advantage on the CRT, able to use columns for combat resolution that allow more losses than you could use.

The whole thing is quite thoroughly explained at the Battle System FAQ in the FAQ forum. :)

Cav are good and cav are great, but after tech 9 you should always keep some infantry along with them unless they need to move fast (ie, revolt-stomping.)

Thanks for all the info :) I learnt again more :)

Well, I just joined an alliance war against the Dutch. Expecting they would invade my Danish provinces, but actually 4,000 of them landed from the Black Sea in Jedisan and crossed the South of my empire until I noticed ;)

Hey, I thought you should have been well ahead of them in tech to do that!

One CRT level advantage is not that big a deal, from the FAQ:
"Tech levels which give you new era are important because they often give you an advantage in combat. The advantage from a better CRT column is not overwhelming; usually two adjacent columns vary only on a few rolls out of 10."

The morale increase at a CRT level can make a difference other than just the combat resolution column used. There are other ways to improve morale rather than just by teching up.

Land tech 9 is only good for a tiny bit of fire power in the fire phase. Except against very large infantry armies, the fire phase doesn't matter much at all until at least land 12. It really starts to be important at land tech 14. The fire phase at land tech 9 just means battles will last longer.
