How is the battle system going to work? Can the player actually help contribute to the battle or will it be just like eu2 with the animation and the numbers going up and down?

From what I've read it will be closer to the HoI system. Which of course also means you don't have much to say once you engage in combat, apart from sending in reinforcements. IMHO, it will be more realistic than EU2 anyway.

Have you checked the FAQ yet?
Warfare
Warfare is similar to the system in HoI with divisions of various types constituting the core of the land forces. Troop types are Militia, Colonial Troops, Regular Infantry, Elite Guards, and Cavalry. Divisions will have home provinces and cultures tied to them. Some sort of tactical decisions depending on the commander of the armies will occur. Each individual ship (frigate, man-o-war, ironclad, and dreadnought) will be named. Combat values are based on the three concepts of firepower, organisation and morale.

What about indirect fire? Will aircraft be research-able? Super-heavy cannons firing from the next province (Think Paris gun)? Shore bombardment? Etc.

The only reason I'm asking, is because in HoI, where needed, you can send in the tac./ dive bombers - and that can seriously alter the outcome of a battle, without sending in more reinforcement divisions. Anything like this around in Vicky? Probably not to the same extent as the WWII bombers, but surely there must be something interesting to use... they did have some very heavy 'mortars' back in the American Civil War... some massive cannon batteries, etc.

I'm sticking to my motto =

will you command the army, let's say you give orders to the army commander and he takes it up from there?

or will you give orders to each division like in HOI?

There are "grand strategy" games that give the freedom to the army commander. Depending on his corps commanders, the brigades will follow orders exaclty or will try to exploit opportunities, depending on their hierarchie,

on the other hand, sometimes corpses could not follow the pace and missed part of the battle and so lowering the effectivitiy of the army,

I would love to learn more about the upcoming Victoria battles!
:)

By placing the troops along a front and not do anything. You can see that in HoI sometimes. ;)

Of course in the real thing there was some attrition due to the constant low level bombardment and sniping going on, but the main losses came as a result of the big "pushes", à la Verdun and so on. But Verdun should probably be modelled as a full on battle in Victoria. Will battles in Victoria be able to last that long?

But I wonder how entrenchment will be modelled in the game. In HoI you build fortifications, but at the time that takes the germans will be in Paris before the first shovel hits the ground. The trench systems developed fairly quickly once the front consolidated.

entrenchment,
trenches,
fortifications,

all are 3 different types of cover, depending on the time available,

no, I'm not a beta. I'm just assuming a brigade can be entrenched ... further degrees of entrenchments are the well known trenches and even further along the road we have nice fortifications - see Maginot line

Very funny, I hope Patric ment something like Total War series. Otherwise, "to control a battle" in RTS games means in 99% cases to mark some 100 units, point the cursor at enemy and give them order like "run there screaming huuuuurrrrraaaaa! and kill'em all".

Well those HOI frontiers never lasted long.
Would be nice if a province could be sort of divided between two fighting armies and a front being drawn if and when there is a stalemate.

How about naval bombardment ? Is it possible to raze factories/forts/improvements, or plain hit the enemy city with naval gunfire ? This sort of gunboat diplomacy would be crucial in my opinion, and would be interesting if say, each bombardment on Istanbul reduced its base tax by 1. The Sultan would cave in no time..

Why is the paradox website telling porkys then?.
I'd assume that this means it will be something like the blitz and assault orders in HoI. With the types of orders available being limited by the skill of the commander.
