Before Mustafa Beyazid has a chance to consolidate his first gains in his campaign to retake the Ottoman Emperor's throne, the combined armies of Constantinople and Venice arrive en masse after having crossed the Sakarya river to the west. At the head of the Constantinoplian army: the Eastern Roman Emperor himself.

As the two men face each other, the Emperor and the would-be Emperor; Manuel II gives Mustafa a wolfish, conspiratorial grin. Bayezid returns the smile, raises his sword and brings it down to point towards the Roman army. Bellowing rapidly in arabic, he gives the order for his host to charge, and the smile upon Manuel's face rapidly disappears.

Meanwhile, on the southern flank of the Constaninoplian/Venitian force, the Venitian commander notices the brief look of recognition between the two men and realises Manuel's attempt at treachery. But as Bayezid's double-cross becomes apparent, the Venitian realises that he would be fighting alongside the Greek traitor, if only for today.

The two sides clash, and the terrible, pitched battle flares into total war. The ensuing conflict is horrific. It is said centuries later that the Roman Emperor, the betrayer himself betrayed, fought hand-to-hand with Mustafa Bayezid himself. Whether or not this actually happened is a subject that will be debated by casual and professional historians alike. All that is known is that upon this day, Mustafa Bayezid, the last of the Bayezid line and last scion of the hope for the glory of the Ottoman Empire is slain. Constantinople loses 3 land mil, gains a semi-permanent morale boost of +1 for 2 years, but loses 1 tech due to the instability caused by the attempted betrayal of her ally.
Venice loses 1 land mil but gains a semi-permanent morale boost of +1 for 2 years and a permanent casus belli against Constantinople.

Mustafa Bayezid's rebel force is annihilated.

Two holy armies clash in the east; the Novgorodians in the name of the Orthodox faith; the Golden Horde in the name of Islam.

The Novgorodian commander had been given instructions to move further into Horde-held territory, but he was a man who knew that leaving a heavily defended enemy garrison behind his front-line would have been suicide, thus he decided to tackle the Horde garrison in Kazan before proceeding further. Still, superior military judgement or not, it does not save the Novgorodians from a stout drubbing at the hand of their Moslem foe.

The Portuguese continue their African campaign, now moving north from their recently captured holding of Orania. However, the poor Portuguese, who are used to more clement climates find the baking daytime heat and freezing nights of Atlas unbearable to campaign in.

Biskra is a tiny, sparsely populated settlement, but even it's puny garrison is able to hold off fully half of the Portuguese army, much to the chagrin of the Portuguese themselves. Algeria will defend Atlas with only 1 base defence, next turn.

The rest of the Potuguese army arrives at the Barbary Coast and unloads into Al-Djazair as the other half turns back north following it's lack-lustre offensive upon the arid province of Atlas.

The two halves of the Portuguese army simultaneously arrive in the capital province, where the Sultan's army is waiting for them. It's a huge, pitched battle that ensues, and both sides suffer telling casualties. Although not quite burning with the cruel heat that it will at peak summer time, the sun is still oppressively hot. How long will the Portuguese, themselves used to more temperate climes, survive in these punishing conditions?

Portugal gains +1 to morale until her return to peace.
Algiers suffers -1 to morale until her return to peace.
Portugal loses 2 land mil.
Algiers loses 1 land mil.
Algiers will defend Al-Djazair with only 1 capital defence, until her return to peace.

The Emperor of the shattered Eastern Roman Empire turns up personally to oversee the fiasco unfolding at Rumelia. Both the Turks and Greeks hold the title of 'Empire' purely at an academic level; both nations are ruined beyond recognition by the recent events that have plagued them and are pathetic shadows of their former glory.

What must be going through Manuel's mind is anyone's guess as he watches his men march in complete disarray towards their enemy, their uniforms stained and tattered, their equipment rusty and virtually useless. Thank goodness for the Greeks that their foe is as equally disorganised and feckless as they are.

How long can Manuel maintain this ridiculous charade?

Jan Zizka leads his hussite followers against their oppressors in the very capital of Bohemia, Prague. With the bulk of the Bohemian armies in Hungary, fighting the anti-Luxembourgian forces of Iván Kuncevyc, the city's considerable garrison is ill prepared to face such a determined attack.

The nobles, wealthy merchant classes and clergymen can do little but look on in dismay as the populist movement's army hurls itself at the city's garrison with the desperation of those who have very little to lose.

Bohemia will defend the province of the same name with only 1 capital defence until her return to peace.

Emperor Manuel can do little but look on in buttock-clenching frustration as his dismal army trudges into yet another bitter stalemate, although the Turks manage to inflict telling casualties upon their attackers before the Greeks finally call off the risable offensive.

Rome is without a Supreme Pontiff to guide them and protect them with God's grace. The armies of Aragon make triumphant landing in Ostia and march upon the ancient city. Its walls, however, remain strong, and its people resolved against these Catalan heretics. Battle rages day and night, and heavy losses ensue upon both sides. In the end, the Romans fight just as valiantly as the Catalans, and as winter sets in, fighting dims to give time for burying the dead.

The Portugese continue to wage war in far-flung Algeria, their intrepid soldiers continually battling, other than the fierce Muslims, the desert sands and scorpions in their boots. Though technologically leaps and bounds over the Algerians, Algiers now has help in the form of Grenada's own military. Their combined might is enough to hold the province from the Portugese, and, stunningly, give back as good as they get. Though it is a Pyrrhic victory for fact that many of the defenders are lost, they manage to exterminate the last vestiges of the Portugese military: the siege is lifted and Portugal is without an army to fight any longer.

In the snowy reaches of the North, the province which the Teutonic Order had wrested from Ingermanland is in turn ripped from their own clutches by the armies of Sweden. No stranger to ice and snow, they use the onset of winter's bitter chill to their advantage, freezing and starving out the populace who fight without defense, the Order's armies elsewhere occupied in the siege of Masovia. The defensive garrison of Kexholm utterly demoralized, they are no match for the Swedes, and the fall of the province is final ... and brutal.

The Imperial forces lay siege to Bohemia, seeking to end once and for all the Hussite insurrection led by Jan Zizka. The capital of Prague, however, is so firmly in the hands of the heretics that all gates are shut, all towers are manned, and some of the best defenses in Europe are brought to bear against the Austrian assault. It is a bloody and a costly affair upon both sides. A stalwart defense strengthened by faith, the garrison of Prague shudders under the brutal attack, but the Hussite archers find ample home for their arrows in the hearts of the Emperor's armies, and when, in the end, the city defenses crack, they do not quite fall. No man remains in arms to man the parapets of Prague's walls, but nonetheless they stand, however shakily. Zizka, however, is delivered into Austrian hands after he in cowardice attempts to flee the besieged city.

The Bohemian rebels lose all land mil. Only the 2 base defense remain.

The armies of Islam's defenders arrive under the banner of Tunisia, laying siege to the battered but not yet broken capital of the Byzantine Empire. Its armies and Emperor absent, the walls remain strong and sure, the fabled defenses of Constantinople holding fast and not merely repelling the Muslim hordes, but through the skillful use of its defensive archers, arbalests, ballistae, and the dreaded Greek Fire, the Tunisian attackers are obliterated.

The remote kingdom of Bosnia moves her armies northwards, into the vast reaches of Poland to assist the Teutonic Knights in their war therein. The province of Galizen is set as the stage for the entrance of the Bosnians into the war, and it is a tenuous result which ensues. Though superior in numbers, the Bosnians find their foes almost on par with the strength of their defenses and the morale of their troops. Advantages mean little when the defensive garrison of a people beset by war is thrown into the equation, and though Galizen remains unbroken, though the Bosnians take small losses, they remain a cogent threat and the Poles have the grace of God on their side for today ... but what shall tommorrow bring?

It is a massive force which lands in Outremer to fight against the King of Jerusalem. Catholic Christendom's southern defenders, the armies of Aragon, Genoa, and Venice sally forth to lay siege to the very city which Crusaders had fought and died to defend against a very different foe not so long before. In one of history's greatest ironies, it is Christian besieging Christian in Jerusalem, and one of its saddest interludes in the bloody battle which ensues. It is not long-lived, the crumbling defenses of Jerusalem built by Crusaders long before now all but dust. The king branded a 'heretic' by Rome is taken captive, his people subjugated, and in the massive invasion of the city where Christ was judged and crucified, Christian blood again runs in the streets.

Bristling at the insolence of the Athenians, daring to oppose and not so long ago to call for the outright deposition of the Byzantine Emperor, it is the forces of the remnant of that ancient imperium which are soon seen ringing the Acropolis, laying siege to famed Athens. However, the luck of the Greeks which assisted them in repelling the Persians a millennium ago at Salamis is with them again, and though there are losses to the defensive garrison, they are not crippling by any means. Athens, it appears, shall live to fight another day. But considering the strength of the Byzantine army, could they simply be postponing the inevitable?

The Golden Horde continues its rampage through undefended Novgorod, assailing Kola, a small northern outpost of no consequence save that it is one of increasingly few vestiges of Orthodox or even Christian enclaves which remain as Islam triumphs. The victory here, suffice it to say, is more than complete. Not only is Kola woefully defended, but the Horde has so easy a time of destroying its defensive garrison that the lusty Muslims decide a few more need to die, and a portion of the remaining populace is put to sword. Orthodoxy, indeed Christianity, is crying out in pain.

As the Turks and Venice piecemeal dismantle a battered Serbia, it is the decision of the Sultan to sally forth with his own army to lay siege to the Kosovar province. The Ottomans meet little resistance, and it is not until approaching the capital that they are met with insurmountable walls. Therein, at least, the Serbians hold strong, dig in for a long siege, and in the lengthy and miserable process of the stalemate which ensues, both incur horrendous losses. At the end of three months' time, however, it is the Serbians who yield, their garrison annihilated, and the Turks take possession, the Sultan doubtless to plan what punishment to mete upon the insolent peasants who have cost his army so dearly.

The army of the Republic of St. Mark arrives outside Athens, so shortly after Byzantium managed to wrest it from the grasp of the Duchy. Led by General Carmagnola, exhorted by the ambitious Doge Francesco Foscari, the army, sprawling in its size, makes short work of the barren garrison, the Emperor apparently having been wise enough to call his troops elsewhere. Thus Venice expends little energy indeed in taking Athens, and victory is complete.

With the onset of war with the French, the Auld Alliance is invoked once more, and the standard of St. Stephen is raised to fly once more in opposition to England. No mere border raid, a full scale invasion is conducted into Northumberland, domain of the Percys, Lord Marshals of England and stalwart defenders against the Scots. It is a bloody battle which ensues at Newcastle, immense losses upon both sides. The Scots, however, have one thing which puts the tide in their favor ... more troops at hand. Even as news reaches Edinburgh of the hard-won victory in Newcastle, it is followed by even more dire reports ... The ever-enterprising Irish, capitalizing upon the chaos of war, have laid siege to Meath with intent to regain in whole once more their island. The Scots fight bravely, indeed, and the garrison holds, but not without losses. The Scots can hardly afford to divert what few troops remain to Ireland, so the question remains as to how long they can continue to defy the Irish, who now have full run of their land, and only this small enclave standing between themselves and full, final independence.

The conspicuous lack of Norman armies from Caen is explained only too late as the wily Giovanna's forces lay siege to the Vendee, much-disputed French province which has seen constant bloodshed and exchange between countries since the time of Eleanor of Aquitaine. The French garrison, even energized as it is with the fortunes of the Maid of Orleans, cannot hold forever. Though the Normans take scant losses, the victory, at the end of summer, is theirs, and the French gains elsewhere are somewhat balanced by a stout Norman victory.

Valiantly continuing its siege, and morale now heightened by the arrival of its King, Eire holds fast at Dublin's gates. And so, too, hold the Scots. Loathe to give up what they have so recently gained, the garrison fights hard, and manages to take some of the Irish out as they storm the gates. In the end, however, it is futile, with Scotland's attentions focused elsewhere in war with England, and Dublin cracks and crumbles ... The gates open to Eire, who may now enjoy what it has for so long dreamt of: a unified island.

The Norman armies move on, fresh from their victory in the Vendee, to Poitou, there to harrass the French further. The French fight valiantly, though, their land precious to them and not given without a fight. Normandie's forces take heavy casualties, but eventually, after a portion of the garrison's defensive walls collapse, it swarms into the provincial capital, and Poitou falls.

Having seen Caen burning, the French move on to Maine, intent upon decimating Norman power. They have heard of the fall of the Vendee, it matters not. They are intent upon their course, and shall not waver. No weak garrison do they meet, but defenders who are as willing to die for their own monarch as the French are for theirs. Battles rage, and the French initially take small losses, but then news arrives of the fall of Poitou ... and the tide changes dramatically. Incensed, enraged, wanting nothing more than to let Norman blood fly for this outrage, they storm the garrison, and utterly overwhelm it. The province falls with not another whimper of protest, and French victory is complete, and glorious.

The French continue their assault on Picardie, joined by their allies and vassals, Provence and Orleans. As they camp outside the city walls, however, the clank of armor not their own is heard drumming in the distance ... it is the approach of a vast force comprised of England, Navarre, Portugal, and Brittany, the last led by its own valiant lord. The French, intent upon destroying these invaders, sallies forth to meet the English head on ... and the battle which ensues is so diverse in the armies which comprise it that it rings true the memories of Crecy. Recalling their utter defeat at that battle, the French are determined to not allow history to repeat itself. They fight with a valor the Maiden would have been proud of, and many Englishmen and their allies fall alongside the French. In the end, however, the numbers are so vastly in favor of the English army that the French cannot hope to triumph. They go to their graves martyrs, and take as many of 'les Anglais' with them. As the casualties are counted, and they are too large to be numbered, Brittany's sovereign lord is found amongst the fallen.

Intent upon retaking their province from the Scots, England moves troops into Northumbria, led by the King himself. The two armies meet outside Scotland's newly-captured garrison, and it is a bloody battle, indeed. The Scots, however, having lost a great deal to take Northumberland mere months before, are in no condition to withstand the English, and eventually falter ... and fall.

In a great showing by the Holy Roman Empire the coalition of nations after the defeat of the Battle of Magyar continue to romp over the Hungarians as is evident in the taking of the provinces of Maros, Carpathia, Ruthenia, and Odenburg by their combined forces. Maros falls to Hannover, Ruthenia falls to Luxembourg, Odenburg falls to Austria, and Carpathia falls to Luxembourg as well.
