Most of us know the composition of the Roman Legions, both the Republic and Imperial one but here is a question for you....

...do you get a overstacking punishment in battles if you create a Legion too big? Lets say my Legion is 30.000 men strong instead of the usual 5-6.000(Imperial)?

Historically, legions were only theoretically 5-6k strong. In practice, the actual numbers varied wildly, and if you have 30,000 men in one army you could always justify it as being multiple legions (and auxiliary legions) grouped together.

Well, the Legions were usually smaller since they were rarely at full strenght... Well, you are right about justifying it as multiple legions so I will have to rename Legion 1 to something else, *LOL* Well, it doesn't matter. I really love the game... didn't start playing it until now though. Really great. Hopefully, Paradox will release more Roman titles... :)

True, they usually were understrength. I distinctly remember reading about a legion that was much larger than it should be, though - but I can't for the life of me remember where.

It's also possible to think of a "legion" in the game as representing a combined force of one Roman and one Allied legion. Which works well, considering allied legions historically made up about half (or up to two thirds) of the Roman army, so my armies tend to be 12,000 strong to represent this. I also have one army to represent a consular army (which consisted of two legions) which I've renamed "Legio IV et V" :) I know, I should change "Legio" to plural, but I'm lazy.

Any good hints/tips? I have read the newbie guide... I've made some colonies up north and have Dalmatia and a couple of more provinces close by that has been liberated and Syracusa. The Pupulists are becoming a menace. One serious uprising so far.

I'm not sure what kind of advice you want. To prevent the populists to gain too much support, then give titles to people who wants them. If you choose to go and conquer the tribes in gaul and colonize, note that your tech will be slowed down.

I keep populists imprisoned(not the party leader) so that I constantly have a tyranny of 2 or so. Anytime my tyranny is at 0 I feel like I'm losing out on it's natural decay as an aid to keeping the evil populists out of power.
