When I want a Field Marshall to attack in a specific area only, I draw plan as bellow...

before.png

However as the units advance the arrow has a tendency to move outside the designated area causing all the units on the front line to attack.

after.png
(I moved arrow manually in this photo in order to save time and demonstrate issue)

Is there a way to prevent this?

Setting a few key points manually tends to reduce this (especially near the end: this seems to happen when frontline bends too much towards the enemy, usually at later stages of attack); doubt this can be prevented entirely, though.

The entire marshall plan never works well for me. So I avoid it most of the time. You can execute your plan better by manually setting up individual general plans.

What do you mean by setting key points? Not heard of this before?

It can be quite good when the issue in the OP doesn't happen, perhaps you already know but I found that if you draw two pincers, select units in each of the two areas and assign them to their corresponding attack arrow the AI generally does quite a good job.

Ahh... I thought that's how you moved that arrow; I see now - my bad. If you hold alt (entering quick edit mode) it will also hightlight path that attack order follows - you can actually drag it around, adjusting attack order, and/or designate a few key point it should follow; can get real weird, too.
