One line summary of your issue
100% GPU Utilization

Please explain your issue is in as much detail as possible.
Whenever the game is running it uses up 100% of my GPU. I've tried enabling v-sync in game, forcing it on through my drivers. Nothing works so far.

Steps to reproduce the issue
Play the game with the latest AMD Drivers on an R9 290x.

My PC randomly rebooting during the game also only started to happen when i play BT but it seems this may be an unrelated bug.

I have changed some settings with my graphics card like limiting FPS and VSync and it seemed to help a bit, GPU temp doesn't rise beyond 90 degrees anymore but it shouldn't even go that high because the game doesn't look that intense when it comes to graphics (my layman's opinion of course.. i know jack shit about game programming).

Is it still rebooting even after confirming with a frame rate counter that you are in fact limiting the frame rate? Or did that fix it?

How come then that BT is the only game my PC had an issue with? As soon as i start the game the fans rev up to deal with increased hit (so far normal for demanding games) but then really gets going when i enter the main action part of the game (i had extended game sessions with modern, graphics intense, games where there was no unusual increase in temperature and my PC ran fine.. i actually had to search for the temperature display settings since i hadn't had to look at them for years).

It can be reproduced each time with BT and no other game or application i ever ran so respectfully i think you're wrong and BT has some issues that need to be dealt with (i'm no programming expert by a long shot so i can't say if the game was fundamentally flawed in its programming or if this can be patched without reworking the game from the ground up).

If you would, i would have you download and run a program called Unigine Valley , or Unigine Heaven, ether is fine, i find valley more relaxing to watch and have a more stable load without to many peaks of dips, unlike Heaven.
When you run it, run it on its highest preset, fullscreen, and make sure Vsync is OFF, FPS should go above your monitor native refresh (likely 60 unless u have a gaming monitor).
Monitor your temperatures when this is going and report back :)

I'm curious, where are you going with this?

Valley is fairly old but still a good benchmark/stress testing tool for what should be normal usage and temperature at maximum. I assume you expect him to get similar GPU Load % and temperature in both the game and Valley?

Hard to pinpoint the source since it happens randomly, especially during longer, 20+ round missions. I assume it's a bug.

Did as you asked and the GPU temp just went barely above 60 which is normal when it has work to do.

At any rate, The DEVs have in a way acknowledged that there is a Vsync issue and it is going to be patched soon. Beta already out on steam for download.

  • Fixed issues with the Vsync setting sometimes not applying correctly.
  • Setting Vsync to be ON by default.

With Vsync working correctly - this may now solve some of the GPU issues.

Im running the same GPU but with an 8320 oc'd to 4.5. GPU averaged 66% usage and 66c according to Radeon. Im on water and I dont think my CPU got about 50c. Kkick up your target fan speed and noise settings and your temps will come down on that GPU.

Thx, i am on Air and the temps are now in the not damaging range so i am ok with that :)

Still the question why this Battletech game brought my PC so far beyond limits not even the most demanding other game i own ever was able too?

As simple as it sounds: Unity . It's ok for Mobile or Side Scroller/2D Games but beyond that it's meh.

Don't know where you're going with this but here you go

Ok thank you.

The max FPS figure seems low, you sure Vsync / frame limiter is off ? You should see max FPS hit over 100.
When its running do you ever see FPS hit the 60 ish mark and your GPU usage drop ? If it is then you have some kind of frame limiter active and it should be disabled for this test.

The r9 390 , running Heaven preset Ultra, Extreme Tesselation, and 8x AA at 1080p, should hit around 1500-1600 score with average fps over 60 and max around 125.

Once you get the expected results from the test, leave the program looping (not in bench mode) for a little while check your temps.

If at that point you card is not reaching anywhere close to the levels it does running BT, then it's likely BT is utilizing the card in a way similar to how furmar can.

I wish i could test myself the difference between bench programs and BT uncapped, but i run a custom loop that has no issue keeping things cool even in unrealistic loads such as Linpack and small FFT CPU loads and Furmark torture tests.

It is possible BT is simply using certain instruction sets similar to how furmark arttificaly creates high heat load. Its not wrong or bad, its just rare and requires users to ensure perfect optimised cooling. its not going to cause harm to your hardware so long as you keep it cooled, if it means running high fan speeds so be it, thats what they are there for. If they were never inteneded to run at such a high speed they wouldnt use high speed fans in the 1st place.

Checking in back after the beta patch: Everything is smooth as butter now.

Alienware x18 with GTX 770m in SLI and newest GeForce drivers.

HOWEVER I also cleaned my fans and exhausts which were full of gunk. So. Yeah.

The beta was smoother WITH the gunk, so I still think there's something about optimization here.

While this is indeed a step in the right direction, this is NOT a fix. This is merely a stopgap motion until they can really get into the meat of the issue and fix the framerate/GPU utilization problem the RIGHT way. Vsync limitations should not be necessary in todays market.

After much testing (setting max framerate, updating nVidia drivers, beta patch, borderless window mode, vsync ingame and forced) I found out that the only thing bringing GPU load down to a sensible level is to reduce the power limit via MSI Afterburner (100% -> 58%). This lowered the GPU temperature of my GTX 970 from 76°C (hairdryer noise) to 60°C (whispering fan) in Battletech without any noticable impact on GFX performance. Thanks to NeonKnight who mentioned this first in this topic.

It's a "good" temporary fix but it shouldn't be needed. I'm still baffled at how many different configurations are affected by this.

The frame limiter works after the beta patch, but still, the load on the system is much to intense.
It still needs quite some optimization, but at least it is playable now.

The fans are still running at up to 50% power while they never rise above 20% in other power intense games like Assassins Creed (High settings) Origins or Battlefield 1 (Ultra Settings).
System is Win10 on i5 6600k, RX 480 8G, 16GB RAM, Display 1080p

I have done all the ticket support asked me, didint change anything, but sadly my headphone mic were bugging just after i used ddu for uninstall my graphic video drivers.
I tried all things, reinstall audio driver, headphone and mic drivers, etc... so i decided to reinstall all my Win 10...
I'll try again Battletech, but my hope goes down with days.
I have to download then reinstall all my software…
I love this game because it's really in my opinon like the tabletop game Battletech, weather, heat, planet environnement are important.
I hope issue will be fixed soon. I have made all that i can, bug reports, Screenshots.
I have to wait devs to fix the issue… not to long i hope….
This game sounds amazing…
(We have an expression in France for these case : "Le supplice de Tantale" (you can see it but cannont touch it…) really frustrating…).

I thinked to solution :
Some game in steam when they lauch install runtime (directx, and other things, unity update), maybe this will be the solution… may be not…
I made an support ticked to nvidia where i ask an mode for optimized settings for battletech and i told then my issue with this game… maybe a driver patch of graphics video card will fix the issue... maybe not…
I send listing of my folder game with all files names to help support to verify game files.
Maybe it'll help then, made screenshots and put asked output and error log with your support tickets…
In your battletech game folder there are folder with date and time create with bugs reports files and if you are "Lucky dump memory files"...
I cannot put dump files because they ware 0Kb....
When my game crashed, then my steam application crashed to…

I don't know what happened with the latest patch (it is listed as 1.0.2.277R on GoG), although the frame limiter is still working, load is absolutely excessive again.
Ventilation has to work at over 70% to keep the card cool, changing the settiongs does not chnage anything.

This really needs to be adressed, something is awefully wrong with the unity engine here.

It's looking like memory leaks or bad paths...or a combination of both.

Edit for clarity: direct 3D will try to set a null buffer forever... (memory leak) as this happens more and more resources are used and your GPU and RAM are taxed further... Utilizing higher and higher percentages... Then you could get a crash after some time once/if your memory buffer fills that d3d11.dll caused an access violation. (these memory leaks can be an issue in the engine, the game code, your GPU driver, your GPU hardware, or your RAM.)

Or the game tries bad paths and runs Dlls it shouldn't. And you get access violation crashes from oddball Dlls...if it's getting less efficient dlls it could also be unnecessarily using excessive resources, when there's a more efficient windows, or core dll. (this issue usually resides in the engine or game code... Or if you have custom user defined paths.)
