Anyone else had it, that barons and counts become your direct vassals uppon inheriting kingdom titles from a vassal king of your own dynasty? I'm tending towards thinking it's a bug.

Why not? If you don't like them to be your direct vassals, pass them on to your dukes, and the dukes will like you for it.
That's no fun. It's more like monotonous work and if I don't do it they join factions or plot to kill me... If you have 50+ barons vassalized and want to transfer one you have to figure out his name first because you cannot sort by holding. :/

Yeah, I too find sorting out lowly vassals very tedious, especially when you have a large kingdom/empire. It's an interface issue. There should be a de jure filter when transferring vassalage.

besides, this is actually a valid strategy for paving successions. If you could manage to hold on the counts and barons directly until you really need the relationship boost, then you could pretty much make loyal vassal dukes (at least until they or you die).
personally, I hold on to mayors under direct vassalage for newly conquered lands, transferring them until I need to (and often, I transfer them NOT to their de jure lords, mainly to keep vassals fragmented)

Do you guys really think it's not a bug? I am very certain my realm was mostly cleaned up when I lost it on succession. When I got it back through kinslaying all vassalization layers seem to have been removed and every vassal I inherited became my direct vassal. I have a freaking 388 direct vassals now -.- on the bright side my income became huge 300 gold/month...

Are you sure. If it really happened like that then report it to the bug report forum with a save before you killed your kin.

I use Riknap's strategy (e.g. delaying vassal transfer) when my ruler is old and liked, and my realm is small enough. Otherwise, I agree it's tedious micro-managament. When my ruler is young and disliked, and I have a large empire, I wish there was a single 'Transfer All Vassals' button, to clear up the mess and put every little bugger under its proper de jure lord.

funny thing is, this is exactly the reason why I kind of abandoned a good-going ERE game I had. The latest save game was day zero of the succession of a new child emperor. I technically could please most direct vassal kings by giving them their de jure mayors, except it was damn tedious, since probably half the mayors of the empire were my direct vassals (looking for the right "mayor iaxouness of ascalon" when there are around 10 of them with the same name got tiring fast - the interface is outright clunky). It didn't help that the game crashed when I was probably 80% in the process of transferring de jure mayors.

I checked an old save and my king vassal has no layers of vassals already. In an even older savegame before the king layer titles were split from the main byz empire title holder everything looks normal. It probably has something to do with inner realm wars.

Edit: No it is the "Born in the purple" succession that is acting up. I'll head over and report it.

had something similar yesterday, where some poor Duke of Bohemia/Moravia deposed the emperor, became emperor, but was deposed himself by the other pretender whose war already was running. When he had lost the imperial title all city and temple holdings in Bohemia became direct vassals to the new emperor.
