So I just tired of waiting for MMP2 for EU3 and decided to dust off the old EU Rome... I picked up the expansion and got rolling...

Only... one of the new icons says I can colonize 2 different territories. I thought, great- however the territories have a barbarian rating of 3 and 4, respectively.

No big deal, I'll march my legions there and 'attack natives', EU3 style. Only, there is no option to deal with them! So I let the Legions sit there for a couple years, and nothing!

What can I do about this?

I've noticed that when you begin to withdraw your units from the province, barbarians are more likely to attack at the beginning of a new month.

Also, don't put "legions" in the provinces, only the supply limit (usually 3 units). I've also noticed barbarians prefer to attack smaller armies rather than legions.

With a leader the supply limit increases as much as the military rating of that leader. Example: supply limit of 3 and a leader of 9 military = 12 units.

Ahhh this explains a lot. I have been trying to figure out why some armies suffer when above the supply limit and not others.

So if I have a supply limit of 6 and an army size eight but with a leader who’s marital skill is three I am ok.

But what if I had a supply limit of six, two armies size ten but with two leaders who marital are both eight, would I still be ok?

If you have multiple armies that combine to exceed the supply+martial limit the army with the lower martial commander seems to take the attrition. If they have the same martial skill then probably the last one to arrive takes attrition. If they arrived at the same time.... The game counts all units in the territory, including the enemy's, so the barbarians can push a small army into attrition.

I second Heinz@Guderian's observation about movement attracting the barbarians. The movement has the added bonus of sometimes getting your army out of the province before the month ends, and if you have an all-mounted army you can often redirect them after they defeat the barbarians to the target province, get there before they take attrition, and get terrain bonuses (if there are any) when the barbarians arrive and attack you. You can repeat this process and wipe out big hordes with no attrition - if you have an awesome general.

Make sure you mouse-over the supply limit if you're going to push it; the game likes to round 2.86 up to 3 and eat your men if you're not careful.
