Banks' dev diaries so far are somewhat 'introspective' in nature (about pops, empire customization and mgt., etc..). Everything seems cool so far but since the release I am yet to see something significant happening to diplomacy, espionage and trade, for example. Things that would take Stellaris closer to 'Grand strategy in space'.

Maybe too soon to complain? Or indeed these topics will not be covered in Banks?

So far as scope goes, Banks seems to be enormous. Wiz has stated that everything shown so far is a small slice of the overall development.

Given that the release is a long way off yet, there are going to be an awful lot of diaries between then and now, and seemingly no shortage of things to discuss in them.

Have patience and see what happens, basically.

Concerning espionage, consider that factions could play a big role in any sort of shenanigans you get up to with spies. You'll need some sort of co-conspirator in your machinations.

Isn't it against Paradox policy to restrict core gameplay to expansions? Diplomacy and trade are core aspects of the game and would be very hard to balance if not featured on patch.

Paradox usually use the paid patch, containing goodies and (usually) non-essential mechanics, to continue its game development and introduce new mechanics. So new mechanics about diplomacy and trade would no doubt be free, but would be with an accompanying patch containing some goodies.

Yet, in EUIV, there is a diplomatic feature that I would really integrate into the base game. So it may depend on their feeling too...

So far Banks seems to focus on pops and ethos which I belive is completly fine because it is an area which showed enormous potential but played incredibly poorly in the base game.

If they make it as awesome as it seems I am totally fine with waiting for more patches to fix the other holes.

Presumably one major overhaul of diplomacy and war and hopefully a large one about goverments and leaders and their interactions with pops and sectors.

At release stellaris was kind of meh, as of the latest patch its a good game and I fully expect it to become great with the next one. If it takes two more expansions to get it to first awesome and then digital heroin territory I am fine with this.

I really like that they have changed from rushing out fixes to the most obvious problems and instead seem to have a clear vision for taking core gameplay features and really getting out all of the potential.

"It is also possible for Pops that are enslaved or targeted for extermination to escape your empire, particularly if there is an influential Xenophile faction that is helping them flee." From last dev diary (core worlds paragraf). Does, as I see it, imply that at least some interaction with foreign factions will be possible. Probably not a full espiange feature, but it could be intresting.

Although as I'm writing this I realize that it could also be read as two internal factions interacting, still interesting though.

It could also be me reading to much into it...

Good point. Maybe the plan is to have domestic features in Banks, and "international" content in the next. We'll just have to wait and see, I suppose.

Bank's internal mechanics are providing a framework for more interesting 'international' interactions in future updates - already hints at this with the refugee mechanics, but also the mechanics based around ethical choices should provide a fun platform for more diplomacy.

I begin to see what Wiz was on about when he kept saying the update's name was a clue to to the content of the update. Especially the latter three Culture novels.

Indeed - I think the next patch is all about fleshing out the base to build upon and it sounds pretty awesome
