The question is, when is the threshold? I am currently playing as VIP:R GC as Scotland and am in an early war against the UK (which I started nearly immediately b/c I didn't think it fair to stay at peace with the UK as a rebel Scot). I have at least 18,000 pounds worth of debt, and it keeps rising b/c of the army I have to maintain at the moment. I figure if I can sack London and grab some war indemnities in a peace deal, I can disband some of my troops for the time being, but right now, I need to maintain an overly large army.

So I am curious, what is the threshold for bankruptcy? Is it a fixed number or is it calculated by earning potential? Anyone have an idea how far I can push this b/c once I go over the limit the game is essentially over.

Thanks

IIRC it happens when your daily income no longer matches or exceeds the interest payment on loans outstanding. But I've never bankrupted myself in game so I could be mistaken.

I think you are right, though I have never experienced it as well.
But looking for the definition of bankruptcy itself, it matches.

That's good to know. That means that you can go really, really deep into debt. I once pushed the US 400k into debt just to see how far I could go. I guess I could have gone quite a bit further...

What is the result if you go bankrupt? Is it "game over"?

Nope, bankruptcy clears your debts, hits you with a -300 prestige hit, and makes immigrants avoid you like the plague for an extended number of years afterwards.

AFAIK you also lose half of your factories. That's just what I've heard though, never gone bankrupt.

Bankruptcy

Caused by: Huge loans

Can be delayed by: large export, population high industry score (basically a large economy). High prestige - this can be a real bitch since you sometimes want a bankruptcy.

Can be speeded up by: Low prestige. Small economy,

Effects: Lose 300 prestige, lose all goods in stock, lose half of your factories.

Not completly true. Sometimes, you can loose much much more than 300 prestige. I once played a game as Oranje, and went bankrupt 3 times. After that, prestige was -2662 !

I'd say that's just a cumulative effect of multiple bankruptcies at once as your trade settings will immediately try to replenish the goods lost in the first bankruptcy.

Nope, it can be much more than -300 prestige for a bankruptcy. It depends on how deeply into debt you were but I've had over -1000 prestige as Ottomans going bankrupt. Also I have no idea where the information about immigrants avoiding a previously bankrupt nation comes from but I've never experienced that. As for how much debt you can carry... I've tried to figure that out in relation to economy but I think it seems to matter more your population and prestige. As undeveloped nations with small industry but huge population I've gone nearly 1million in debt yet a small population country but large industry like Sweden can't carry much debt at all even with high prestige.

I think bankruptcy is a broken event though... for instance as Ottomans it's incredibly easy to defeat UK and Russia if you don't worry about money and simply build armies and then go bankrupt. Even at around -1500 prestige you can recover within 10 years because you will have gained huge amounts of land and when you are negative prestige DoW's cost only 1 prestige rather than 100. So you can climb back out of the prestige hole easily and rapidly by a few wars vs weaker powers like your own satellites and the italians states etc. I think Ottomans and Russia are in best positions to use bankruptcy in the game as they both have huge populations and undeveloped industry so losing 50% of factories doesn't matter at all. Russia taking over best portions of germanies and eastern europe or Ottomans taking first Egypt, then India and Caucus regions in the first 20 years and then releasing a few satellites to reduce BB makes a powerhouse with low BB, huge income and population, and no major enemies on your borders to threaten a BB war or interfere in industrialization.
